Democratic candidate for Governor, attorney Steve Beshear, is poised to become Kentucky's next Governor. Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher, plagued by a hiring scandal and political advisors that can't "shoot straight," has resorted to the tried and true of the Republican party: yesterday he placed the 10 Commandments in the Capitol Rotunda. More Rovian tactics showed up in the form of fake robo calls, pretending to be from the Fairness Alliance, informed voters that "homosexuals" supported Steve Beshear.
Yes, these are desperate measures from a campaign that lags behind anywhere from 17 - 23% in recent polling. The outcome is all but insured. The Kentucky Democratic Party (with DNC help) put together an impressive ground campaign that should help many of the down ticket races in this election.
Democrat Jack Conway, running for Attorney General, is far ahead in polling over his rival, Republican Stan Lee, who is as extreme as they come. Lee is made veiled inferences that Conway is gay. Both Fletcher and Lee have refered to their opponents as "San Francisco treats." Their base appeals to their base will not help them in this election.
In the race for State Auditor, Crit Luallen, the incumbant, also holds a comfortable margin over her opponent. Their are rumors that Luallen may run for U.S. Senate against Mitch McConnell. In recent polling, Luallen polled just slightly behind U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler (who says he will not run in this race) in challenging McConnell. 2008 appears to be the election in which McConnell will be most vulnerable.
Democrat Todd Hollenbach, Jr. also appears to be headed for victory in his race for State Treasurer.
The "bellwether" race in this election is for Secretary of State. Incumbant Republican, Trey Grayson, had flirted with running against Fletcher for Governor in the primary, earning the Governor's disdain in the process. Polling shows Democrat Bruce Hendrickson in a dead heat for this office, which is very surprising given the supposed popularity of Grayson. Staunch Democrats are hoping a defeat for Grayson will put his political career in the backseat. Steve Beshear's coatails may be just long enough to make this hope a reality.
All in all, it appears that this election will be a good one for Democrats in Kentucky.
The Pat Boone reference? The following is from Bluegrass Report:
Who knew Pat Boone was such a raving lunatic, as well as Bush-loving, anti-free speech, anti-science bigot himself? Here's his annotated Wikipedia entry:
In 2006, Boone penned an article for WorldNetDaily in which he argued that Democrats and others who are against the Iraq War cannot, under any circumstances, be considered patriotic.<7> He was interviewed by Neil Cavuto on Fox News, where he expressed his outrage against the opponents of George W. Bush (namely the Dixie Chicks) that their criticisms of the President showed they did not "respect their elders".<8> Another article defended Mel Gibson after the actor was recorded making an anti-Semitic rant.<9> In early 2007, Boone wrote two articles claiming that the theory of evolution is an "absurd," "nonsensical" "bankrupt false religion." <10><11> He later wrote an editorial where he made up a fake fairy tale where a young Prince Charming was seduced by a dwarf, got AIDS, and then overdosed. <12><13>
