Election 2008: Huckabee vs. Clinton & Obama
Clinton 46% Huckabee 43%

Thursday, November 08, 2007

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who recently rose to the top tier of GOP candidates in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll, has pulled to within three points of the Democratic frontrunner in a general election match-up. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows Senator Hillary Clinton earning 46% of the vote while Huckabee attracts 43%.

As noted in a recent analysis, Clinton is the unifying theme of Election 2008. In general election match-ups, she consistently attracts between 46% and 49% of the vote regardless of which Republican hopeful is included in the poll.

The latest survey also shows Senator Barack Obama leading Huckabee 49% to 38%.

Because Huckabee is a latecomer to the front row, Rasmussen Reports has not surveyed his general-election strength as frequently as other Republican contenders. But over the year he has gained ground on both Clinton and Obama.

The former First Lady held an eight point lead over Huckabee in both August and September.

Obama had a twenty point advantage over Huckabee in March. That slipped to a nine point lead in both August and September.

This national telephone survey of 1,200 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports November 2-4, 2007. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

1. That's the way it's going to be with her--all the GOP candidates will be
close, except maybe Romney. Obama beats them much more handily, but no one apparently cares in the Dem party.

5. Not true
Margin of advantage vs GOP (according to Rasmussen's head to heads)

Giuliani - none
Huckabee - +8 Obama
McCain - +2 Hillary
Paul - +7 Obama
Romney - +3 Obama
Tancredo - +4 Obama
Thompson - +1 Hillary

So Obama has a distinct advantage in candidates that have little or no chance of being the GOP nominee.

7. She's barely hanging in there even with weak sisters like Huckabee and Thompson--
I'm sorry, but that's nothing to be proud of, as the front-runner.

2. If Huckawhatever had a snowball's chance, this poll would mean something.
He doesn't. It doesn't.

4. Well, he's a lightweight and has some fatal problems, so I hope he's the nominee--
but she should be doing better. There's just a certain segment that won't vote for her, no matter WHO the GOPer is.

6. Obama and Edwards are SO much stronger general election candidates that I can't believe we're
considering corporate lap dog ballot poison as our nominee.

8. That would change if the public learned more about Huckabee
Let's not panic just yet.

(I'm an Edwards supporter, by the way.)

9. Huckabee's very strong second place finish will be THE story out of Iowa.
