'Radical Islam' should jolt voters, evangelicals say (Gary Bauer)
Source: USA Today

Following last month's Values Voter Summit in Washington, conservative Christian power-broker Gary Bauer sent an e-mail to supporters.

He ticked off the issues dear to activists in attendance. Opposition to "abortion-on-demand" and preservation of traditional marriage led the way.

Then the one-time presidential hopeful turned his attention to a different threat, one social conservative leaders hope will shake their constituents from their apathy about the 2008 presidential race.

"The war against Islamofascism is in many respects a 'values issue,"' Bauer wrote. "That may seem like an odd statement at first glance, but, as I have often said, losing Western Civilization to this vicious enemy would be immoral."

1. I see it differently
I see it as the battle of enlightened Humanism by certain people here and throughout the world against biggoted and crazy people who want to blow each other up over their beliefs in God or Gods. As far as I'm concerned, Bauer and Bush are the enemies. Many in Iran and Iraq are not.

3. Well, now we know the siren they are going to work up the evangelicals with, don't we?
Gay marriage? That boogeyman won't work anymore I guess as it did in 2004.

Immigrant bashing? That boogeyman backfired against the GOP in 2006.

Muslim terrorists against the Christian world? That's their ticket in 2008.

4. Sorry, boys, but I feel much more of a threat
from radical Dispensationalist Evangelism. Christian blasphemers are a lot closer and a lot more powerful than poor Muslims half a world away and every bit as nasty.

6. Jesus (no double entendred), that works for me!!!11!!1
They can either take the Puggy nomination & send everyone to the left of David Duke into the arms of the Democrats, or they can run as independents & deprive the Puggies of their diehard 25% loony fringe. It's a win any way you look at it.

7. "losing Western Civilization to this vicious enemy".
Yes, religious fundamentalism (of all stripes) is a threat to Western (and Eastern) Civilization.

11. Jolt voters into what?
a frenetic, reactionary, xenophobic stance?

Islamic fundamentalism should actually make people question ALL forms of religious extremism, including not only fanatical Islam, but RW Christianity as well. This is a battle between rational humanism and religious insanity.

Bauer and his ilk belong to the latter. They are hardly a better alternative to the fanatics in the Middle East.
