Poll question: Can Obama win any southern states in November?
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas

Florida can not be considered because it is not the "south"

32. Why did you leave the southern boy Edwards out
Of course he can win Southern states, he is running just 4 points behind Hillary in his own state, and can win in the south, after he takes Iowa, watch him go in the south, especially his home state.

5. Good chance that Webb will be on the ticket
Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 11:18 AM by BeyondGeography
and Virginia will go blue. Kaine, an Obama endorser, is pushing Webb big time (so complain to him if you think it's a bad idea, not me :P).

He'll also inspire such large turnout throughout the South that the Republicans will be forced to spend real money there. His down-ticket impact will be hugely positive in the region.

7. You nailed it.
It is not about winning in the south it is about making the GOP spend money where they never neeed to before.

That puts Ohio Missouri, Virginia and COlorado much more in play.

16. On the face of it, he's a great choice IMO
He fits two critical needs: Shore up the overall ticket's credibility on defense and bring a battleground state into the win column. Some posters have pointed out that his personal negatives could be an issue and that he used to be a Republican; the second part bothers me not one bit as it fits with Obama's commitment to reduce inter-party tensions.

21. From what I've heard of him, he's a pretty staunch Dem these days. I hadn't
heard him mentioned as a possibility for an O ticket before this thread. The more I think of it, the more I think he would be an EXCELLENT choice!

6. If Obama gets the nod there will be a huge voter registration drive
in the South and an even larger get out the vote on election day. It will be the next great media scandal as the Repukes scream bloody murder and accuse the Dems of having every illegal alien in the South voting. Get the popcorn out.

8. Re: Southerners
I think we all see how Southerners will truly vote based upon what happened to Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee. They might poll a certain way when asked publicly but when they're alone in the voting booth their fear and bigotry comes out. They just can't stomach voting for a black man or a woman for that matter or a Democrat for that matter. Virginia is the only state in play for Democrats, the rest are lost.

Virginia's state senate just went Democrat last month and Webb and Kaine won as well so Virginia is the only hope.

9. I hear that Tennessee Argument alot...
but a black man finished with what 48% of the vote in a deep south state. I thought it was a pretty good showing. He got slimes and could not close the deal against COrker, but he was leading before the playboy flap.

14. Polling in the Ford race was accurate
In fact, some polls showed him losing prior to the election by a wider margin than he actually did. Post-David Dinkins in the 1992 NYC mayoral race, I haven't seen any strong evidence that the so-called Bradley Effect holds any water anymore.

18. I agree completely! Even my son, who is a strong Dem said to me
"The Dems HAD a lock on the Presidency because soo many people are flat out disgusted with Bush, and what the hell did they do? They put up a woman and a black guy! They're throwing their guarantee away! Nobody I know is going to ever vote for either of them!" Now I understand we live in Ga. but he knows a LOT of people and so do I. I HATE to admit it, but he's right! Racism and prejudice is very alive and well especially in the south!

10. Not a chance in hell for any Democrat. Can't we just cut it off, float it out to
sea, and send it down to Davy Jones? That would solve so many problems for this country.

12. You forgot Virginia, which is now a purple state. The DC suburbs
are blue now and contain a huge percentage of the population. Virginia is in play.

11. Possibly Virginia, but most of the South is solid red territory.
Here in Georgia, I read comments from people who will stay home if Guiliani is the nom. Why? He's a pro-choice pro-gun control Damn Yankee. Yep, that still is a voting consideration here. And Thompson and Romney pissed off the flaggers with the confederate flat question at the You Tube debate.

Neither Hillary nor Obama nor Edwards will win Georgia. No chance in hell here that the R won't take the state. I think the Dems should definitely talk to the South and improve their numbers, but let's be realistic here.

…WEST!

Surely New Mexico, Colorado, and Nevada are more in play than any of the deep South.

20. Obama has no chance of winning any Southern state
Neither does Hillary. Edwards might be able to win Arkansas and Tennessee, but thats about it. And Florida is a southern state, except for the Miami area, but Miami votes Cuban-exile Republican, anyways.

22. depends quite a bit on the VP
if voters reject Obama because of experience and Obama has a Biden or Richardson or somebody else on there it could make a big diff. Especially if he gets a southerner with a long military and political record to run with him.

24. VA maybe
They seem to be trending in our direction, but I'm not sure if they'll be purple enough by '08 to vote for the Dem.

The others are doubtful, I think, for any of the Democratic candidates. AR, maybe, for Clinton, unless Huckabee's her opponent. LA maybe at one point, but I think they've trended too red. SC, MS, and AL= when hell freezes over.
