Bill Shaheen quits Clinton campaign
Bill Shaheen quits Clinton campaign
By JOHN DISTASO
Senior Political Reporter

Bill Shaheen has resigned as a co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s state campaign, UnionLeader.com has learned.

Shaheen last night apologized for telling a reporter that if Barack Obama becomes the Democratic presidential nominee, Republicans will use his admitted past drug use against him. Clinton this morning personally apologized to Obama in Shaheen’s remarks. The two candidates reportedly met at Reagan National Airport in Washington.

In a statement given to UnionLeader.com moments ago, Shaheen said, “I would like to reiterate that I deeply regret my comments yesterday and say again that they were in no way authorized by Senator Clinton or the Clinton campaign. Senator Clinton has been running a positive campaign focused on the issues that matter to America’s families. She is the best qualified to be the next President of the United States because she can lead starting on day one. I made a mistake and in light of what happened, I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the Co-Chair of the Hillary for President campaign. This election is too important and we must all get back to electing the best qualified candidate who has the record of making change happen in this country. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”

8. Bullshit, Bill. That was an organized, top-down attack.
I will bet there is much hyperventilating going on at the various HRC campaign offices.

Screaming, too.

Getting pretty wobbly, it seems.

21. Patronage is the proper word and didn't the Medici do it well?
Didn't save 'em from corruption. So far, the Clinton machine hasn't done anything scandalous in NYS, so why fear national expansion? Sheesh, if you have to have a machine ... and we do ... can't we do better than the cronyism of the GOP w/o suffocating the thing at birth?

We've given HRC more than a full term. She gave us everything she promised and respectability. If that's not honorable, then public service is a crock - and I'm not that cynical.

So your attitude is your problem. In reality, HRC and her hubby have made NYers proud and I'm not alone in this sentiment. She can take that to the WH ... she's earned it.

29. As a born and bred NYer myself, I disagree. And comparing the Clinton machine favorably to the
Medici doesn't do Hillary any favors. This represents the corrpution we have to weed out, not encourage. We do not need any "machine' Clinton or otherwise.

34. But you can't disagree w/facts: HRC is popular here.
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 06:18 AM by Fredda Weinberg
Your disagreeability is your own issue. NYers have a Dutch heritage of tolerance and historically welcomes leaders who need a proving ground.

The Medici are a fascinating case study if you seriously fear dynasties. But you think you can weed out corruption - Tammany Hall persists. You do know about our city's patronage machine ... the Democratic Party, don't you? Even Republicans on Staten Island register otherwise to have a say.

C'mon ... facts are facts. If you want to bring your own grievances to the table, don't point out your breeding. It does you no credit.

something exists is not reason to admire or continue it. This is the reason I am supporting John Edwards. He is calling out that corruption, not encouraging it. The corruption that was Tammany Hall that persists is the very reason Hillary is Senator. As far as popularity goes I guess you weren't aware that Bill Clinton was refused membership at practically all the Country Clubs in Westchester.I was frankly shocked. I had supposed he would get an "automatic" honorary " membership at least.I thought that was "done" for ex-presidents.It had been done for ex-governors. New York City is not all there is to NY and the Clinton's, especially Hillary are not equally popular everywhere. Most folks in my hometown can't stand Hillary.

I'm confused as to why that comment would be deemed serious enough to resign over. It seems fairly obvious that Republicans would try any tactic to roll over a Democratic nominee..

It was probably just convenient for him to leave after his smear. He was most likely on his way out anyway.

A nice way to re-shuffle the campaign at the last minute, but keep a nice face on it.

24. Good first step.
Now show us you mean it, and dump Mark Penn and James Carville.
While you are at it, distance yourself from Joe Lieberman and K Street.

That would go a long way in gaining some respectability.
