Shaheen's Democratic Opponent
If you're disgusted with Bill Shaheen's gutter politics, then I suggest you visit the web site of Jay Buckey. Buckey is running for the Democratic nomination for US Senate against Jeanne Shaheen.

Jay Buckey is a professor at Dartmouth Medical School and a former space shuttle astronaut. He's running a grassroots, reformer campaign. He's worth a look.

3. Grow up
I'm condemning the Shaheen brand of gutter politics. The Shaheen operation has a long track record of smearing Democrats who don't swear absolute fealty to Billy and Jeanne. What you saw from Billy Shaheen over the last 24 hours is par for the course here at home. Many of us here in New Hampshire have had our fill of this sort of garbage, and we prefer a Democratic candiate who is more concerned about our country than about another round of ass-kissing.

6. I consider it a package deal
Jeanne plays the smiling suburban mom card, while Billy twists arms, makes threats, and attacks opponent's character.

I suggest you talk to a fellow named Mark Fernald. Mark was a Democratic state senator who challenged Shaheen for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2000. After belittling Fernald as an insignificant pest for months, the Shaheen campaign saw some shakey poll numbers and launched a massive, vicious negative mail campaign against Fernald. Votes were dostorted and taken out of context, and, more distrubingly, Mark's character was called into question. Mark Fernald is one of the most decent and honest men ever to serve in state government, and his only transgresion was challenging Jeanne Shaheen for her mishandling of the school funding crisis.

I'll also point out that the Shaheens did everything they could to scuttle the campaign of now-US Rep. Carol Shea-Porter. The Shaheens were backing Jim Craig, a milquetoast establishment Democrat from Manchester, and they used their pull in Democratic circles to secure an early, pre-primary DCCC endorsement for Craig. Fortunately, the grass roots saw through that escapade. Of course, Bill Shaheen now takes credit for Carol's victory, since he was named an honorary co-chair a couple of weeks before the election, but in fact, he played no role in Shea-Porter's stunning win.

5. My memories of Shaheen were watching her do a terrible job as spokesperson for Kerry
to the point where you never saw her on television again and seeing her lose rather decisively in a campaign debate with Sununu that was televised on C-Span. I've never seen more than mediocrity from her.

Are Shea-Porter and/or Hodes going to swing either way in this race?

7. Not sure
Hodes will probably go with Shaheen, since he worked as an attorney with Shaheen & Gordon for several years.

Carol is harder to judge. Billy was an honorary co-chair of Carol's campaign, but he only came on board well after the primary. During the primary contest, the Shaheens backed Jim Craig, the pleasant but bland establishment state rep from Manchester, and helped secure an early DCCC endorsement for Craig. This move left a sour taste in the mouths of many Dems who were not Craig fans.
