Poll question: Do you believe Mitt Romney cried when Mormons allowed blacks in their church?
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 09:21 PM by antiimperialist
“I can remember when I heard about the change being made. I was driving home from — I think it was law school, but I was driving home — going through the Fresh Pond rotary in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I heard it on the radio and I pulled over and literally wept.

20. Perhaps you don't know a hell of a lot about what Mormons believe.
There's always that possibility.

32. They believed that Blacks were black because they turned their backs on
God. One of their presidents said that if a Mormon were to have sex with a Black person he would die on the spot.
When the government said they would revoke their tax free status, because of prejudice, suddenly, God spoke to their president to say that it was OK to allow Black men to be priests in the Mormon Church. So convenient.

4. yes, but for different reasons. "Oh no, they're going to let them in?"
was his real reaction. and then he flipped, when and where appropriate. and flipped again, when necessary, and so on and so forth.

At that time it was absolutely impossible to pull over in the Fresh Pond Rotary and live.

27. I noticed he failed to mention ANYTHING he or his family had done to make that happen
Interesting - he went on and on about how he PERSONALLY felt about blacks, but he obviously did absolutely nothing to ensure equality of treatment for minorities in his church.

We don't need a president who PERSONALLY isn't a bigot but will not lift a finger to ensure that OTHER people don't discriminate.

29. Your poll question is incorrect, or misleading.
Blacks were allowed in the church. Blacks had callings and some positions of leadership.

Black men did not hold the Priesthood until 1978.

30. Yes.
A man running for President admitting he cried isn't something he would likely make up.

A lot of Mormons were happy about the decision. You didn't see them leaving the church in large numbers because they hated black people. It was a horrible thing that they didn't allow black people to have priesthood positions but Mormons weren't wearing white hoods and burning crosses.
