OBAMA ATTACKS (Nader Style): Says Hillary is "Just like George W. Bush"
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 10:55 PM by DemKR
Barack Obama unleashed a blistering attack on his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton yesterday, branding her "just like George W Bush".

The cutting comparison came as he launched a last-ditch push to win over Democrats in Iowa, who vote on Thursday in their caucuses, the first stage of the presidential nomination process.

Now, his lofty rhetoric about hope and change is laced with sharp, sarcastic jabs at Mrs Clinton and her husband Bill, who have sought to paint him as a naïve lightweight who doesn’t have the stomach for a fight.

At a Des Moines rally that drew in more than 1,000 people despite freezing weather, Mr Obama abandoned his previous timidity and, while not mentioning her by name, aimed barbs straight at the former First Lady. "We can’t afford a politics that’s all about terrorism and ripping people down rather than lifting a country up," he said. "We can’t afford a politics based on fear that leaves politicians to think the only way they can look tough on national security is to vote and act and talk just like George W Bush."

This is OVER THE LINE. PERIOD

4. annie,
Every campaign uses tactics-sadly. Now, I agree with you that "not having experience" isn't anything we should fear, but perhaps we should fear it when it comes to how to run campaigns. I know you'll vote with the good one in the end :)

If you are awake enough to see Obama's attacks...you will see how Hillary has handled them, maturely, with experience. And it's helping her. We cannot afford to be swiftboated again...

Let me know if u want to talk.

9. It was an answer to this:
Bill Clinton, now campaigning in Iowa for his wife every day, has raised the spectre of another September 11 style attack and stated that only Mrs Clinton had the experience to deal with a terrorist atrocity.

Mr Obama blasted back by suggesting that this was reminiscent of the tactics of Mr Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney in 2004 and amounted to "using 9/11 as a way to scare up votes".

What he said:
Obama: "We can’t afford a politics that’s all about terrorism and ripping people down rather than lifting a country up," he said. "We can’t afford a politics based on fear that leaves politicians to think the only way they can look tough on national security is to vote and act and talk just like George W Bush."

I check every quote that strikes me as outrageous these days, and I find that they are usually not what was really said. A pattern has emerged.

And they're the ones who are parsing and misquoting because they think hillary's in deep shit with a web of lies and deceit enveloping her campaign.

101. Hey Bake, howzit.
OK, so in the real world, say if you were in a work situation, you are effective if you are hard on the problem and easy on the people.

In this and many other situations, Barack is hard on the problem, and the opposition bends over backwards to personify the discussion. The man is talking about the problem, not the people. What we are seeing is a programmatic hysterical response, designed to move support from those of us who don't have time to research every damned jumbled quote and figure out that we are being lied to.

It's beneath this party. I sincerely hope HRC didn't design this response because it does not speak well for her.

What's uncertain is, does the lie leave a bad enough tase in the mouths of us those that do get the context, to cause them to take up the debate against the lies, (yours truly included) more than it leaves people thinking something false is true.

Lots of people still believe Iraq was responsible for 9-11; who said something about a lie making it halfway around the world before the truth puts its shoes on?

Anyway, nobody is calling you or anyone naive. Okeydokey, back to my life. Aloha.

11. Good! We need a truth teller in the White House!
Hillary Clinton is like George Bush's fraternal twin.

She voted "yes" on Kyl/Lieberman--which was George's first propaganda plank in his
marketing plan for attacking Iran. Now that Hillary helped us define Iran as a
"terrorist organization" George can do whatever he wants to them!

Ahhh...I love the smell of cluster bombs in the morning!

Not to mention that she's remained silent-but-deadly while Bush rapes the Constitution,
wiretaps us illegally, declares torture a national pastime and suspends Habeas Corpus.
Her silence--as she sat as a powerful NY Senator on the Armed Services committee--gave
George a bucket-load of lubricant so he can continue screwing us all seven ways to Sunday.

(Ooops! Did I say that out loud?s

Furthermore, the last time I saw such an orchestrated, overly-managed, scripted, closed-off
political campaign come through Iowa--George Bush was at the helm. Hillary's campaign has
been a total and complete abomination. After she planted questions at Iowa events, she
changed her strategy. No questions! I've never seen anything like it before.

It's about time Obama and others called a spade a spade!

26. And who's joined Lieberman recently to resurrect the Culture Wars?
Her initials are H.R.C.:

http://www.alternet.org/story/70798/

Senators Joe Lieberman (ID-CT), Sam Brownback (R-KS), Evan Bayh (D-IN), and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) called for a thorough review of the video game ratings process in the wake of "Manhunt 2" receiving a "Mature" rating. In a letter to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), the Senators detailed how the change in rating opened the door to widespread release of the game, which depicts acts of horrific violence.

Well that is just peachy. Do we suppose Hillary sat down and actually played Manhunt 2 on the campaign trail in order to arrive at this conclusion, or did she just take Joe's word for it, much like she did when she voted for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment that others have quite rightly pilloried her for? Because Joe, you'll recall, was a useful idiot for the Bushies when they discovered Iran had no nuclear weapons program and they had to find another reason to bomb them into the stone age -- something they neglected to tell the public about. And despite the fact that Clinton's excuse for voting for the AUMF was that she had "bad information" from the Bush Administration on the Iraq weapons program, she decided to trust them -- and Lieberman -- and amp up the Iran war rhetoric.

One wonders at what point she will stop following Lieberman over the cliff.

This predates her campaign for the White House considerably.

When Obama first came to the Senate, Lieberman showed him around the Senate and
helped him find his way initially.

Knowing you manipulative-Hillaryites--Obama probably said that quote after being asked
about Lieberman's tour-guide talents.

Nice try, sweetheart!

Also, Obama supported Ned Lamont over Joe Lieberman. Talk about a gutsy move. He
was fairly new to the Senate, and Lieberman was a career-Dem politician with a lot
of power. Obama stood with the anti-war Lamont and dissed his Senate tour guide.

I'd say that those are the actions of a man with courage and principles, wouldn't you?

12. Way Over The Line
we don't need that. What's that Conswervative creed: "don't speak ill of another Republican."

Well, that seems to be out the window in this election, and I think that's a good thing. That creed goes too far and stifles genuine debate.

However, I do believe a candidate should not say anything in the primary that could come back to haunt their fellow party member in the general should that party member win the nomination.

I'm not sure who made up the headline - looks like someone over at Huff Post, but there is nothing at all in the article to substantiate that headline. I'm pretty sure the OP knew that. Then, I read a little further down in the comments, and find Obama has been using those words in his stump speech for a while now. THEN I read the part about Bill Clinton using 9/11 to promote his wife. Sheesh. Now THAT is "over-the-top". I thought Rudy had that covered.

This is a bullshit OP posted by someone who obviously backs Hillary. THEN the OP proceeds to talk about Obama attacking other dems. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I kind of wish Obama HAD said that - it would be the truth, but the fact remains this is a bullshit OP, and one of the worst ones I've seen yet. Some of Hillary's supporters scare me.

47. No kidding. What Obama said
is true, we can't afford the politics that use fear.

If he ended this with "so don't vote for Hillary" that would be attacking Hillary. She is not just like bush.

These have been the strangest series of attacks on Obama lately.

He attacked Edwards/lawyers...based on a partial quote that people decided must be an attack.
He attacked Gore/Edwards based on a partial quote that people decided must be an attack.
Now he is attacking Hillary through this quote that we all agree is frigging TRUE? Though we all agree that
"We can’t afford a politics that’s all about terrorism and ripping people down rather than lifting a country up,"
"We can’t afford a politics based on fear that leaves politicians to think the only way they can look tough on national security is to vote and act and talk just like George W Bush."
We decide what he really means is that this is describing Hillary.
He didn't mention a name on any of these and people are assuming way too much.
Yes Gore and Kerry are who won but if the rest of the quote had been used he talked about the country being divided with 47% on both sides. Oh, horrible attack.

You know what? He went to the bathroom today and by that gesture he was shitting all over the Democratic party.
Also he ate food and he was really showing he'd chew our rights up.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone.

81. It's been part of Obama's stump speech for months.
Nice try, though. The only way anyone would feel he was talking about Hillary would be if she was, in fact, using the politics of fear. I imagine, with her husband saying only she could handle another 9/11, or something similar to that, it's quite possible to jump to the conclusion Obama was talking about her.

I would guess that they're tired of the old fear tactics in Iowa, and I do agree what Bill said was "over the top", but the headline in your OP is bullshit, you know it, and so does anyone else who can read, and bothers to read, the article.

He never even mentioned her name! The headline in the article is misleading and inflammatory --

Here's the QUOTE:

At a Des Moines rally that drew in more than 1,000 people despite freezing weather, Mr Obama abandoned his previous timidity and, {b]while not mentioning her by name, aimed barbs straight at the former First Lady. The WRITER of the article decided Obama "aimed barbs straight at the former First Lady".

That is just SO WRONG -- I don't care who the candidate is!

EDIT to add link AND to say -- The Weekly World News recently went out of business - I think we know where those writers found new jobs.

51. Thing is, DemKR, you knew this was not what he said when you posted.
You were around for the last round of cleanup on this particular lie. Hoping we can get past this kind of spin. It leaves good people with the wrong idea, and it does not seem to be unintentional.

55. Of course he can do wrong
but what about the quote do you disagree with?

Why everyone is assuming this is an attack on Hillary is beyond me. The quote speaks for itself.

I don't care who anyone supports, this is going crazy.

It is creepy.

72. That's not what the poster said.
No one said Obama could never do wrong.

No one said Obama is God.

The poster stated that no one said Clinton is just like Bush.

73. No - that's not my point. I'd be as incensed if there was an unfair headline
about Hillary. The article makes it sound as though Obama said "Hillary is ...." and he never said that.

It's the principle of the thing that got my hackles up - which is why I said I'd react the same regardless of which candidate was being unjustly portrayed.

Peace.

Satan spelled backwards is NATAS — which stands for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the organization that gives out the Emmys. Oprah has some of those!

82. Hey, I like to respond to responses that aren't for me, too.
And I'd like to nominate this OP for possibly THE best OP ever, in possibly the whole, entire, wide, wide, world. It is so brilliant, in fact, that I have now changed my primary vote for the 2nd time tonight.

Earlier tonight, I changed to JE because of the phone jamming possibility, but now I'm SO changing it to Hillary because of what Obama didn't say about her. I swear I just didn't know what I was thinking when I picked my candidate - not one of the times, up until this moment!

75. Now who ran around saying....
that if there was another 911 we couldn't trust......(wait for it) Kerry in the WHouse?

It seems to me that bush-cheney-& surrogates used that line in 04.

Apparently, President Clinton is now adopting the same script.

If you want to get ripped about using right-wing language, you might focus on that. Apart from Clinton's line lacking logic, it was out of Cheney's playbook. We don't know how any of the contenders would respond in crisis. We do know that Senator Clinton's foreign policy team includes some very hawkish people (think: Lee Feinstein and General Keane.)

I would guess that Obama needed to respond and he did. Team Clinton crossed the line instilling fear with the idea that with anyone but HRC in the WHouse, we need to run for our lives. Obama or any Democrat will bring in an experienced team.
