A one-time Clinton donor and Hollywood entrepreneur has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission asking it to reopen an investigation into a 2000 fundraiser that he helped organize for Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate campaign.
The donor, Peter Paul, contends that Clinton's Senate campaign violated the law by not properly reporting nearly $2 million that he says he spent to arrange the event in Brentwood, Calif.
Campaign reports filed with the FEC estimated the cost of the event at about $500,000. Clinton's former national finance director, David Rosen, was acquitted of charges that he lied to the FEC about the fundraiser. At the time, Rosen's lawyer said Paul concealed the actual cost of the event from Rosen, a claim Paul denies.
The event was sponsored by a joint fundraising committee, New York Senate 2000. Its participants included Clinton's Senate campaign, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the New York State Democratic Committee.
In 2005, the FEC ordered the joint fundraising committee to pay a $35,000 fine for failing to report more than $700,000 in expenses for the event, which featured such stars as Brad Pitt, Diana Ross and Cher. The FEC did not accuse Clinton of any wrongdoing.
