66. I'm sorry, but indeed it is.
The item was first reported as an unsourced, irresponsible story in the New York Post's gossip column, PAGE SIX

January 14, 2008 -- PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama claims to run a clean campaign, but someone in his camp took a swipe at Hillary Clinton through the candidate's theme song.
As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z's "99 Problems" was blaring. In it, Jay raps, "I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."

http://www.nypost.com/seven/01142008/gossip/pagesix/hillary__barack_rap__rock_142152.htm

The videos you were watching were of that very event and clearly demonstrate that U2 and not Jay-Z was playing at the very moment that the Page Six item describes.

Here's a link to a dailykos piece that thoroughly refutes this piece of trash:

67. Kos notes "Per the Boston Globe,Obama's standard playlist (from another event)." - its a claim that
can't be proven unless you accept the witnesses as telling the truth to the reporter - but then it is also impossible to prove that it didn't happen without tape or witnesses on the other side that you believe.

All in all - a bit of unimportant non-news either way as the candidate does not control everything in their campaign.

7. Doesn't matter
It's out there. That's all they need to do. If they can get the lie out just once, they will have accomplished the goal. One or two of these "mistakes" a week and then say "oopsie, my bad".
The lie or the slime gets out there and influences voters.
I called this a while ago, having watched how Dick Morris and Karl Rove have influenced campaigns.
It's really brilliant and really really sad..

30. I didn't like the way Abrams handled that segment
First he blamed the media for taking things out of context regarding the so-called race war between Obama and Clinton because he said the media wanted to create conflict. Presumably, conflict is good for ratings, because the media want to stage a boxing match.

But then Abrams refused to hear about any other incidents where the media pushed and inflated stories in order to create conflict and heighten drama. He refused to allow any commentary on the accusations regarding Obama's drug use or the statements about his alleged Muslim ties.

If Abrams thinks the race-baiting is all about creating conflict and drama by the media, then why does he limit it to a discussion of just race? By focusing entirely on just the race-baiting and not the other stories sensationalized by the media in this campaign, he himself is making race a big story. He's part of the problem and not the solution.

29. Ahh, there's the rub
By Obama responding and debunking them Team Clinton has accomplished their goal: Get Obama off message.

They can't beat him on Change, Hope, etc so they have to knock him off his game, and drive the poltical discourse down. So mini-attacks here and there will leave him fending off all these little things, by the time he's squelched one- another is out there!

If he engages it he will spend precious time chasing down each and every one of 'em.
If he doesn't respond then he is being pinpricked to death with little lies, "accidents", misstatements, and "oopsies" played on the news every night.

Hillary only has about 2-3 weeks to win this thing and he is too likeable at this point. Sorry "unvetted" in Clintonspeak.
And what did we learn from Dick Morris/Karl Rove style politics?
It's not about how much the voters like you, it's about how much they dislike the other guy.
So drive the opponent down. Don't get busted doing this, but drop the other person's favorables down as fast as you can. Hit them with a few true things, then a few outright lies, then a few more true things. After a few weeks no one will know the difference, and no one will be able to keep up.

39. But then the campaign
becomes about who is "slinging mud", etc.
It moves off of issues like the economy, the war in Iraq, health care, changing politics in America. Issues were Obama was actually winning. It devolves into a he said/she said debate about who said what/when, with John Edwards off in a corner reminding people that, yes, he does in fact exist.

When people are talking about the issues Obama does fine.
But by shifting the discourse away from issues and onto race, Team Clinton has turned Obama the "Change Candidate" into the "Black Candidate".

And they were able to do this with just a few "accidents" and the 3-pt. assist goes to the media, which has been played like a fiddle once again.

19. Anyone see this? MSNBC linking directly to Hillary Clinton's campaign
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 10:20 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
This may be no big deal. But if you click on the link below, it takes you to an MSNBC front page story about Hillary Clinton's interview yesterday on Meet The Press.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032608/

If you click on her name at the head of the article beneath the date, "Sen. Hillary Clinton", it takes you directly to her website, where you are asked to give a donation to her campaign.

Is this normal? Do all the news stories about a candidate feature their name in bold at the head of an article with a link to their campaign? Maybe they do for all I know. I'm not accusing MSNBC of playing favorites, if this is customary. And I'm not blaming Hillary Clinton's campaign, but possibly MSNBC instead. I don't think I've ever seen this before with other candidates and the news stories about them. But I could be wrong.

If I were to think of a massive American human tragedy worth crying over, Katrina would be the first I would think of. He said her tears were phony, and that was stupid (and off-message). But the race card? You're really, really stretching there.

Are all mentions of Katrina an invocation of Kanye West?

64. I wouldn't expect a Hillary supporter to be a friend of the truth
It must be fun watching people lie and know they are lying and somehow get your jollies off the fact you know they are lying.

Weird shit.

82. remind me to gloat and post every little bad thing
that happens to Hillary instead of defending her as I have over and over again. Fuck that. And you're the reason why, sweetie. I think I'll post a segment from Bedell Smith's new book and dedicate it you.

Or not. Because I'd hate, hate, hate to be remotely as tacky as you are.

Obama's soundtrack

So I've now spent way too much of my morning trying to report out the New York Post's item that Obama had sexist entrance music:

As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z's "99 Problems" was blaring. In it, Jay raps, "I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."

It's a provocative scene. But I can't find any evidence that it happened, though it does seem to have been the subject of chatter among staffers of both campaigns.

According both to the Obama campaign and my sources out there, Obama only attended one "victory party" in Des Moines that night -- at which he entered to a U2 song. He His supporters -- though not the candidate -- then then went to the Des Moines restaurant Centro, where nobody's ever heard hip-hop, and didn't that night. There was also a music-free victory conference call with Obama.

But if anybody actually heard this...let me know.

And less, er, speculatively, Crain's reports that he has the bulk of hip-hop support.

2008 Music for Obama?
Posted by Eli Sanders on January 14 at 11:05 AM

Remember back in December, when Barack Obama came to Seattle and held an event at Showbox SoDo is which the Dusty 45s and Brad played? And remember how Eric Grandy and I had a short discussion about how Blue Scholars would have been a better pick for the event, but how they might not have been Obama’s first choice for political reasons? (Of course you don’t. I barely remember. Basically, we were talking about the razor’s edge a black candidate has to balance on when selecting rap music for campaign appearances.)

Anyway, check this New York Post item out:

January 14, 2008 — PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama claims to run a clean campaign, but someone in his camp took a swipe at Hillary Clinton through the candidate’s theme song.
As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” was blaring. In it, Jay raps, “I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one.”
Some listeners took it as a not-so-sly reference to Hillary.
Which, by the way, does not mean it’s true. The indispensable Ben Smith can’t confirm this playing of Jay-Z actually happened.

I was there at Obama’s victory rally in Des Moines. And while I can’t say I would have recognized “99 Problems” if I’d heard it, I can say that my ears definitely would have perked up if I’d heard lyrics like “I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one” playing during Obama’s entrance. I know Obama’s been entering and exiting to U2 lately, and I’m quite sure he either exited or entered to a U2 song that night. But I’ll cue up my digital audio recording of that speech and see if I can catch any previously-unnoticed Jay-Z…

UPDATE: My digital audio recording has Obama entering his victory rally in Des Moines to U2’s “City of Blinding Lights” and exiting to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” You can listen to it here.

(I don't know how many of you have heard the song, but you CANNOT miss that line "I've got 99 problem...". He repeats it at least 99 times.)
