Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 07:45 AM by joeprogressive
That could be very damaging and unlike the swift boat ads, it would be true. They could have the women speaking with their identities pixelated. They would say, "I was raped by Wayne Dumond and Governor Huckabee had him released so he could rape and kill two more women"

That could be very damaging to Huckabee. Although it has come up, notice the MSM has mostly ignored it like they ignored the facts in Air National Guard story pertaining to Bush.

1. I don't like the idea of using a victim of rape in a political ad...

4. I don't either but........
A. It is true
B. They could conceal their identity
C. I don't like the idea of another Republican presidency

So maybe if we would stop being so freakin PC and fight like they do, we could actually win.

11. I do! Fight dirty, kick them while they're down,
in the balls if possible.

If it's true, and this story most certainly IS true, then get it out there. Willie Horton his ass.

6. Sorry to foist that upon your unsuspecting eyes so early in the morning.
I've seen it intermittently for about six weeks, and I still scream a little each time I look.

12. Good point. "Like the Swift Boaters, only honest."
That'd be the way to frame it.

Or, my preferred framing: "We're gonna go Willie Horton on yo' ass."

14. I think the retelling of the story in objective terms is quite appropriate
Quite simply a governor made a decision and this is what happened. If you want to vote for him or not vote him you might want to consider this incident, plain and simple. I'd like to think that democrats are incapable of swiftboating anyone.

13. willie horton
Aren't these the same tactics that Dems deplored when Bush I used them against Dukakis?

If you have any principles, then you must be consistent in your ideals. You cannot condemn the tactic when used by your opponent, then turn around and use it yourself. That is morally and intellectually bankrupt.

15. I can argue this two ways, which would you prefer?
Argument one: Statue of limitations is up. Twenty years ago, level of acceptability was calibrated differently than it is today (and yeah, it's gone up and down--19th century Presidential mudslinging was way worse than it is today.) Too many elections since then have happened where we've elected to take a high road only to have our high-mindedness shoved up our ass.

Argument two: Going after Huck on this one is NOT all that analogous to going after Duke on Willie Horton. Duke didn't know who Willie Horton was; Huck most certainly did know about this criminal and quite openly advocated on his behalf. However, I do enjoy using the phrase "We will Willie Horton yo' ass," to Huck, because it conjures up unpleasant memories in voters' minds.

I could probably think of a few more, but those are the first to come to mind.

18. see your point
But once you go down the road of using tactics that were formerly derided as being beyond the pale, then you forfeit all right to criticize your opponent for doing the same thing.

If you want to pursue a "win at all costs" strategy, then go for it. But I don't want to see any posts on here about those evil scumbag Rove-ian bag of tricks RW'ers.

16. Are they the same tactics?
What makes the Willie Horton situation the same as the Wayne Dumond situation? For example, was the level of participation and involvement the same for Dukakis as it was for Huckabee? Please be as detailed as possible. Because the only common elements I see are that Dukakis was a governor, as was Huckabee, and a convict released during their respective governorships committed another crime.

19. Given that Huck actively participated in the release while Duke did not, no.
Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 10:31 AM by bunkerbuster1
It's not that similar, really.

But voters' memories are very foggy--about all that most people remember is that "Dukakis let that black murderer out on leave," even though it was far more complex than that.

Well, Huck really DID lobby to let out a violent rapist go, and he was goaded into doing it by right-wing lunatics who claimed a Clinton connection.

It's not dirty pool to point that out, and it's instructive to voters on several levels, not just the blatantly sordid one.
