80's memories, and the effect they have.
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 01:13 AM by Mother Of Four
(Disclaimer- I am after all 37 years old...I turned 10 in October 1980 and was a teen when Madonna/MJ/BIG HAIR was all the rage...so my timelines might be a little off)

Singing "Eye of the Tiger" ROCKY!

RAMBO!

The Vietnam War Memorial being on the news, and how proud I was that "someday" I could go and trace my Uncles name with a pencil and paper.

Wanting to grow up and be Sally Ride

I remember sitting in horror and shock as Mr Hughes, my science teacher played the radio in highschool...and Challenger Exploded. How all of us looked at each other, and many cried.

Vanessa Williams, the first black Miss America

MLK's birthday becomes a National Holiday

Miami Vice (Good lord)

I remember when Arnold was a pretty popular action star.

Geraldine Ferraro

New Coke

WWE and Rowdy Roddy Piper

Finding the Titanic

I remember Nuclear fallout assignments in Science, "You have 12 hours notice...what do you take and where do you go?" and watching "The day after" in class.

Chernobyl

The meetings and tensions between USSR and USA over ending the cold war.

Watching Oliver North with my family on TV

I am Alaskan, Exxon-Valdez (I just live in NC now)

The San Fransisco earthquake

I remember watching my friend Craig whither and die in front of me, and only a handful of people went to see him because of fear. I didn't care, I held his hand anyway.

I remember being the first class to actually have "condom education" due to the AIDS epidemic.

The Berlin Wall (Its strange, my husband now is 13 years my senior...and as a soldier was stationed in Berlin...it's odd to know the man you love is a part of history, even though it's a small part he played in it)

If you are wondering why I posted this...
It's because *MY* memories of the 80's come in bits and peices...the things that most affected me at the time.

They are the past, just as Reagan is past...and Clinton is past. Just as the Bushes will soon be the past.

Those memories are valuable, and helped shape who I am...but they aren't my future.

Lets look to the Future-
Another post supporting John Edwards.

1. I remember the very first AIDS patient that I took care of
and watched die.
He was 20 years old. Beautiful young man.
We didn't know much back then and we all gowned, gloved, masked, etc. and were not allowed to enter other rooms if we were taking care of him.
His meals were served on disposable dishes.
It was all so cold, so sterile.
And he was so...alone because they didn't allow him to have visitors.
Nobody should ever die like that.

2. I too remember all of those things.
I came of age in '84. I pointed out to a much younger friend that the movie "Dazed and Confused" could have been about my high school days as well as nearly a decade earlier. It was a lot closer to the truth than "Fast Times."

I remember the Iran hostage crisis, and the failed rescue. I remember them blaming Jimmy Carter for the fact that the military screwed the pooch. I remember hearing afterward the talk about George Bush Senior meeting with Iranian diplomats in Paris to keep the hostages until after the election. I remember Reagan winning and the hostages being released post-haste.

I remember Madonna, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Men Without Hats, as well as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, WASP, and the first incarnation of John Bon Jovi.

I remember Michael J. Fox as a young Republican and Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli. I remember Michael J. Fox time traveling with a little help from ol' Reverend Jim and Keanu Reeves time traveling with a little help from George Carlin.

I remember the Terminator, and Nightmare on Elm Street. I remember Cheech Marin before he played a cop. I remember Ice-T before HE played a cop, when the cops wanted him to shut the hell up.

I remember the Challenger explosion and some of the sick jokes that surfaced afterwards.

I remember high schools with smoking areas and without metal detectors.

I remember concerts that kids could actually afford.

I remember David Lee Roth and Kevin Dubreau and Joan Jett and Lita Ford. I remember the Blizzard of Ozz and Thriller.

I remember "Greed is good" and "Glastnost." I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall. I remember "Winds of Change."

Oh, I remember the eighties very well. Strange days. Strange days indeed.
