Edwards Response to bu$h SOTU
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Tonight, Senator John Edwards released the following statement in response to President Bush's State of the Union address:

"The president tonight renewed his call for an economic recovery plan. But the plan he and Congress have offered leaves out tens of millions of Americans who need help the most. This plan would take months to have any impact, and the people I meet everyday on the campaign trail do not have months to wait. These people are hurting now and need this help now. Over the past seven years, typical workers' paychecks have failed to keep up with inflation, millions of families are facing the loss of their homes to foreclosures, health insurance premiums have doubled, and families are spending $1,000 more a year on gasoline. The State of the Union may be interesting political theater, but until we find bold solutions to the challenges facing the country, we will be stuck with the same old small, Washington answers.

And in the chamber of the House of Representatives where the president speaks, even though this Congress stopped listening to him a while ago, they will still applaud and cheer him. The truth is that Washington is out of touch with what's happening across the country. Between now and January of 2009, Democrats must stand up to this president, stand up for what's right, so he does not continue to forget about the middle class in this country."

19. Poor Nancy seemed to lose her awareness and look to be
dozing off. I liked how only half the group the Republicans got up and cheered bush. I printed off a list of changes since 2001 and the most irritating thing was that Bush raised his salary from 200,000 to 400,000. It should be repealed until this country is out of debt.

The Govmt. stole $78B, collected in SS taxes on YOUR income last year, and used it for other purposes! Thats how Bush knows SS isn't going to be there for you, he's been using! Did you notice the unanamous applause when he stated he would KEEP the tax cuts? THEY ALL benefit from it!
WE DON"T!
Call & suggest that "Georgie Porgie Puddin & Pie" return the $200,000. extra salary he has been getting for the last 7 years!

52. Actually President Clinton signed the pay raise in 2000.
http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa012101a.htm

The increase came as part of the Treasury Department appropriations included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2001 and signed into law by President Clinton on Dec. 21, 2000.

68. Same with Congress.
If they vote for a pay increase it can not by law come into effect until after the next congress is sworn in. Theoretically that way if we the people don't want to give them a raise we can throw them out of office come election time.

He would have done so. Then again the way the Democratic Congress rolls over and plays dead for him I have no doubt he could have pulled it off.

I actually heard a nut-ball freeper claim that President Clinton signed the pay raise so that Hillary could have it after 8 years of *. Freepers have a conspiracy theory for everything.

75. Well Mr. Intelligence
Come to the central valley here where a great portion of the work is seasonal and low-paying at that. WHY is it low-paying? Because the fruit growers fear you aren't ready to pay what a quart of orange juice REALLY ought to cost. Maybe you could start up an industry to give these folks gainful employment when the oranges have all been picked. Or are you hoping that some hopeful Whizard will swoop his wand and create jobs?
Still - while you lay out your self-help plan, what are our less advantaged citizens supposed to eat?

66. Rich Man in Big House
As one who grew up in the Great Depression, I can remember another very rich man who lived in a very big house and wanted to be president. This man became president and in his presidency, he did more for the everyday working man than the Republican Party has done in its entire existence. His name was Franklin Roosevelt and the house he lived in was called Hyde Park.
John has shown by his work that he will work for working people and he has shown he can win.
