Obama vs. Clinton, and now Toni Morrison vs. Maya Angelou
Obama vs. Clinton, and now Toni Morrison vs. Maya Angelou

Monday, January 28, 2008, 10:09 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

We’ve put you onto Barack Obama’s second TV ad, aimed at young people in Georgia. And you know that author Toni Morrison, who dubbed Bill Clinton “the first black president,” has also sided with Obama. So now the question is, does poet Maya Angelou trump the Nobel-Prize author of “Beloved?” Lord knows which one Oprah would pick. In Georgia, the Hillary Clinton campaign is set to go up with this radio ad featuring Angelou, entitled “My Girl,” along with this one by Magic Johnson.

Says Angelou:

“As a child, Hillary Clinton was taught that all God’s children are equal, so as a mother she understood that her child wasn’t safe unless all children were safe.

“I know what kind of president Hillary Clinton will be because I know who she is. Hillary Clinton has always been a strong woman and a passionate protector of families. For 35 years, that’s exactly what she has been doing.

“Each generation stands on the shoulders of those who came before. Today, the challenges facing us threaten the dreams we have had for our children. We need a president with the experience and strength to meet those challenges.

“I am inspired by Hillary Clinton. A daughter, a wife, a mother — my girl.”

13. Odd to me. Toni has always been so anti-black-male.
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 02:42 PM by jasmine621
Her writings give little redemption to the black male characters she writes about. Maybe, Obama chnages her feelings?

6. Sorry, I'll take Maya over Toni.
I've seen her speak, she's really incredible. For some reason when I think of Toni's books its just the cow-fucking that comes to mind:

All in their twenties, minus women, fucking cows, dreaming of rape, thrashing on pallets, rubbing their thighs and waiting for the new girl.

And what was up with that one ending where the protagonist learns how to fly at the end???

18. Was this from an instant blast fax from Clinton Headquarters?
Damn, their Operations Research is on fire!

These are the people that should be put back in the Whitehouse! Better, yet, - hopefully Rove never cleared out his office - he could just move back in next Jan 20th. Bushes, Clintons - what's the difference - same tactics!

WOW! Awesome political work.

If they trot out a Black Man - we will trot one out.

If they trot out a Mexican, we got one waitin' in the wings! (Unemployed, but keep it on the DL - laid off by WalMart)

Oh baby, can't wait 'till they try an Asian -

Yeah - Lucy Lui is with us - Bitch!

20. Eh? Angelou has been with the Clintons a long time.
I heard Maya talk about their connections in the 90s. I believe the Clintons were a big part of why she was able to read A Brave and Startling Truth to the United Nations. She hasn't been "trotted out".

8. OK, this is ridiculous
F. Scott Fitzgerald is endorsing Hillary and Hemingway is taking Obama! does it really matter?

(I guess that means Edna St. Vincent Millary is taking Edwards).

11. Faulkner is clearly pro-Huckabee.
He might not like his politics, but it will be great material for a new novel.

14. Exactly! But he will be countered by Oscar Wilde
After watching MSNBC last night, I have to think Oscar will go for Romney and his Dorain Gray agelessness.

He's a hard-boiled, think-with-your-fists kind of guy. Or at least that's what he thinks.

17. nice ad... Both women are entitled to their own opinions
My parents are both staunch Clinton supporters. They like that Obama is doing well and they want him to stay in the race as long as possible to confuse the repugs.
