ATLANTA (Reuters) - The inability of John Edwards to gain traction in his bid for the U.S. Democratic presidential nomination indicates that fighting poverty in America has limited appeal for voters.

Edwards told audiences it was "the issue of my life." But he dropped out of the race on Wednesday because too few responded to his anger at inequality, his heart-rending stories of suffering and his passion about combating corporate greed.

"These are not issues that generate a lot of votes or poll particularly well," said Mari Culver, wife of Iowa's Democratic Gov. Chet Culver and a tireless campaigner for Edwards in her home state.

Critics called the former senator a hypocrite last summer for getting a $400 haircut and building a large house, but by the end of his campaign many advocates for the poor praised his dedication to the issue.

1. Sadly, while we might not like it, that's the truth. You have to remember that after Hurricane
Katrina, many Americans seemed genuinely downright surprised that there are people living in extreme poverty in this country. And it seemed (at least for a minute) that we were going to actually have a serious conversation about poverty in this country.

And then Bush went to Jackson Square and mentioned poverty as well.

As we all know, poverty is once again barely a blip on people's radar screens, sadly.

2. Give it time. It's scary for people to think about now. When more of us fall
into the poverty level, and have to live like the poor have been living for so long, it'll become newsworthy.

3. Sad but true. When poverty is nipping at one's heel, one tends to notice the issue.
