The LA Debate

Tonight's debate between Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama should be interesting. The supporters of both campaigns are hoping that their candidate does well, and we can expect the usual subjective and sometimes dishonest spin to take place after the debate. Later for that noise.

What I am interested in -- and am hoping a few other DUers will be as well -- would be the questions that could help people understand the strengths of each candidate. I'm not looking for cheap shots that intend to make either one look bad. I think that most of us would agree that the "journalists" who have done the debates tend to toss softballs to the republicans in their debates, and to hold the democratic candidates to a very different standard of questions.

If you could ask Senators Clinton and/or Obama a question (or questions), what would it be?

Thank you for any responses.

H2O Man

Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
Where the little girls in their Hollywood bungalows

Are you a lucky little lady in the City of Light

If they say I never loved you
You know they are a liar
Drivin' down your freeways
Midnite alleys roam
Cops in cars, the topless bars
Never saw a woman...
So alone, so alone
So alone, so alone

2. It is cold in
rural, upstate New York. Listening to that song reminds me of some carefree days spent hanging out with my normal brother in LA a couple decades ago.

3. Okay.
If people could go "one at a time," it would help. It's hard to keep track of everyone avoiding this at once.

The debate is going to be a good one and one all of us should take very very seriously.

We are going to have a Debate tomorrow that is 1 on 1, this is unusual in a Democratic Primary. We have a chance to get to the heart of both these campaigns, i hope they don't waste it.

Obama vs Clinton

Now there are points i am going to be looking for tomorrow night that i think a majority of people watching will be looking for.

1 : Specifics :

I want to hear loud and clear what these candidates stand for, there is no excuse in a 1 on 1 open debate for being wishy washy. Sen.Obama has been accused of being short on the specifics, he absolutely must demonstrate this tomorrow night, the same for Sen. Clinton.

2 : How they handle themselves in a debate :

I am interested to see how Sen Obama will hold up from what I am sure will be a strong debate performance from Sen Clinton. They must equally show they will be able to demonstrate they will be able to handle the RW attack machine.

3 : Condescending attacks :

This needs to be watched by both candidates. Recent polls have said Both Clinton and Obama attack unfairly in equal measure. This will be watched carefully tomorrow night.

4 : Cockiness :

They must also be careful not to give off an aura of "I'm the winner" its a big turn off. Humility goes a long way.

5 : World Leadership

Demonstrate clearly what they are going to do in the WH, not just on domestic issues but on Foreign, terrorism and leadership.

I for one am looking forward to this, its rare to get to see this.

5. Here is a question that will never be asked but the subject could be raised by either candidate
In your opinion, has the consolidation of media ownership in this country been a good thing for our country? How important is it to have a Press corp that holds Government Officials accountable?

Can a democracy survive without the free flow of information that an effective 'Fourth Estate' provides?

8. Obama will be here in Santa Fe tomorrow. I hope to question him.
For both candidates, I'd like answers to these questions:

1) America has disappeared behind a wall of signing statements and constitutionally questionable laws enacted in the last seven years. What will you do to dismantle this edifice of sham and restore constitutional law to the country?

2) With regard to the principle of separation of church and state, where do you stand on the concept of "faith-based" programs? Will you cut back, or expand, on spending tax dollars on religious institutions?

Maybe I'm naive. If a candidate voted for a sham, will they respond to such a question?

I would hope that Senator Obama would answer these questions. They deserve honest answers.

17. What type of plan do you propose to end corporate lobbying of
elected public officials?

If elected, when do you project that you will have the last of our troops out of Iraq?

In the upcoming recession there will be extremely high levels of unemployment. What will you do to help unemployed Americans survive?
