If the general election is the NFL, then Obama is Vince Young on draft day, while Hillary is Troy Smith. Obama/Young's a bit rough around the edges and could use a little more seasoning, but he's blazingly fast, powerful, big, and capable of dominating the league. Meanwhile, though Hillary/Smith has had a brilliant college career culminating with a Heisman Trophy (something that Obama/Young lacks), she has maxed out her potential because a 6 ft. quarterback with below-average arm strength isn't going anywhere in the big leagues. So in the college career (aka the Senate), Hillary/Smith has more experience and accolades, but Obama/Young's the one who can thrive in the next level.
What I'm basically saying is that Hillary's appeal is mainly to traditional Democratic constituents, while Obama can not only galvanize reluctant young voters that can tip the scales, but also appeal to Independents and Republicans. Hillary hits her peak during the primaries, while Obama continues to ascend during the general election.
