‘Latino Caravan’ for Clinton Drives Through Upper Manhattan

A group of Hispanic politicians, led by Miguel Martinez, a Dominican-American city councilman, drove cars in a caravan through heavily Hispanic sections of Upper Manhattan this morning in an effort to drum up support for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Latino Caravan, as it was billed in Mrs. Clinton’s campaign literature, made its way from 155th Street and Broadway, in Washington Heights, to 216th Street and 10th Avenue, in Inwood, where it ended with a small rally....

Mr. Martinez said that Mrs. Clinton was the best candidate to focus on economic development, health care and comprehensive immigration reform. “It hits home when we talk about immigration,” he said. “Having someone that can give a solution is extremely important to our community.”

Mr. Martinez also said, “We know that Hillary has a plan to stop the war and bring people home.” He cited two soldiers from the area who have died in the fighting in Iraq — Sgt. Riayan Agusto Tejada, 26, in April 2003, and Cpl. Juan M. Alcantara, 22, last August. Both men, Mr. Martinez said, were not citizens but were nonetheless fighting for their adopted country.

State Senator Eric T. Schneiderman, a Democrat who represents much of Upper Manhattan, said that Bill Clinton was “tremendously popular in this community” and predicted that Latinos would heavily Mrs. Clinton over Mr. Obama....
