Outrage du jour: Clinton's "Plagiarism" Charge falls flat
Clinton's "Plagiarism" Charge Falls Flat
By Oliver Willis on February 18, 2008 7:08 PM

When I saw the Clinton campaign http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8570.html">claiming that Sen. Obama had committed "plagiarism" for echoing a few words from another politician's speech, I thought "are they serious"? This is the sort of useless charge that seems to once again show the fingerprints of an inept Mark Penn operation. By this standard, every time a politician said "ask not", he or she would have to provide a stackful of footnotes attributing the phrase to President Kennedy. For a change, the nightly news broadcasts on ABC and NBC noted how trite this accusation is (nobody tell the ODS-infected pro-Clinton sites, it's the http://www.taylormarsh.com/archives_view.php?id=27038">outrage du jour).

the irony isn't lost on me that in response to Clinton's original challenge about words vs. action he uses a speech about the power of words using another's words.

23. Are you proud that Hillary launched a bogus and disingenuous attack, and that her campaign spent the
day fanning the flames? Are you proud that when it was pointed out that she lifts language from everyone, including Obama, they shrugged it off as those standards don't apply to Hillary?

10. Nothing "ends the discussion" with you Clinton supporters and your fake outrages.....
....you'll start it all up again tomorrow.... with a new fake outrage.

We've seen this game too many times now.

Your candidate's campaign is going down in flames... they know it... and yet they keep pouring gasoline on their own funeral pyre.

33. the problem is they always try to make a mountain out of a molehill
And they end up making only themselves look bad. Petty and foolish.

You'd thing they'd get a clue and stop digging themselves deeper each time it backfires on them.

This is a perfect example of politics as usual--and the people are good and sick of it.

Just because your TV news said he "apologized" doesn't make it so.

If you're that gullible, no wonder you're a member of Team Clinton.

15. Who is to say the charges fell flat?
We will have to wait until tommorow to find that out. It's up to debate whether these accusations will stick or not. They don't have to be true to stick. Remember the Rethugs Swiftboat ad in 2004 about Kerry? There wasn't much truth in that, but it stuck.

We shall see tommorow what happens. If Hillary wins the state, the charges certainly won't have fell flat because she would have accomplished what she tried to do.

24. What if the undecideds only catched the early news cycle?
And not the late news cycle where this was debunked?

In a close race like this, you never know. Undecides could go overwhelming to Hillary tommorow, and that would give her the state....

FYI, the swiftboaters came out during the primaries and he hit them back. So lets not trash Kerry who is an outspoken Obama advocate. OK?

26. To you they fall flat, BUT
To many, the charges ring indisputably true. When a speaker uses another person's uniquely, created or coined phrases, fails to credit that person, and gives the impression the words are his own, that's being disingenuous. It's a reflection on the speaker's character and trustworthiness.

And trustworthiness is something in which our nominee's opponent, John McCain, stands tall.

Downplay Obama's goof all you want, but it will redound negatively on him. A lot of us are now having second thoughts about him. Is he really what we have been thinking he is?

His misstep shows we still don't know enough about about him.

And if he ends up our nominee, how much more will the republicans dig out? What's next?

Bottom line: Nominating someone we have such a thin file on, could put us at high risk for a third-consecutive defeat in November.

We have to remember the forest: We want to win the White House.

34. so what
even for the few people that the charges ring true, first of all they'll think about it for 5 seconds and give it up, and secondly they'll see she's done it many more times than he has, and without the approval.

Most bystanders will look at the fact that his friend gave him those lines to say and will say, that seems ok.

Most innocent bystanders will not think that all those people she cribbed from gave her permission.

So it ends up a negative for her.

And DU : Primaries isn't it. Today's news cycle will be filled with concrete things, such as primaries, and delegates, which is something Clinton's campaign has lost sight of a long time ago.

There are suckers who believe the plagiarism story.

There are suckers who think explosives were planted in the WTC.

There are suckers who think bigfoot causes chemtrails.

Just because there are suckers who believe it, it doesn't mean the charges haven't fallen flat.

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 12:27 AM by Bok_Tukalo
To a certain degree, I can understand the general election thing because it is a McCain shot (weird that Clinton is conceding the election almost by criticizing Obama's general election financing position) but to see die hard Republicans on other sites throwing out the other charge today was strange. Since when were they Clinton fans willing to do her viral campaign dirty work?
