Should dem-leaning reg. indy's in PA vote for Toomey in GOP Sen. primary?
I'm not sure what the turn-out will be for the primary, but the 2 are within 10 points of each other in the polls. So, we know they like to interfere in our primaries. Do we want to face a much more beatable right-winger, at the risk of having 2 of them from Pennsylvania in the senate, BUT ALSO have an opportunity to have a democrat win AND have the right-winger rub off negatively on Bush in a state we need to win and Bush is within a few points of us in recent polls.

The primary is at the end of April, so there is still plenty of time to covertly organize, and perhaps change registrations to independant if need be. If I were in PA, I personally would do it, vote for Toomey. I mean, it's not like we should feel any comradere with Spectre, he did invent the single bullet theory

1. I think primaries are closed here in PA
Also, be careful what you wish for. I remember people thinking that we had dodged a bullet when the unelectable moron Bush beat out McCain.

2. Well, we sort of did. McCain would have wiped the floor with Gore
He would have won independants and white catholics by like 15 points. I had to study that whole election bit by bit in my first year of policsi. With Bush, we basically did beat him. Would McCain have been a million times better president that Bush? Of course. But He also would have garenteed in all liklihood GOP control of the whitehouse and congress(he most likely would have ushered in huge majorities) for at least 8 years

3. Spector
As Republicans go, he ain't that bad, but Joe Hoeffel would be a much better senator, and bring some balance to Rick Santorum and his New Holy Inquisition and Family Variety Thrill Show.

The risk is worth it. The Pennsylvania GOP is in serious trouble in and around Philly and Pittsburg. Assuming Toomey wins the primary and the election, adding a second PA Republican jihadi to the Senate would cetainly fuel a revolt. Plus, I think that in six years, the GOP will start losing seats faster than a mob-run toilet manufacturer.

Still, I think Spector will win the primary. He will be at least evenly matched with Hoeffel in November.

As for gumming up the primary, I also think that PA voter registration closed about two weeks ago.

5. Toomey claims that Specter is just as liberal as Kerry
keeping in mind that political leanings tend to be a matter of perspective...

if Toomey thinks Specter is TOOOOOO liberal, then how far off to the rightwing does Toomey stand?

as much as I would like to get rid of Specter... I am hesitant about supporting Toomey - it would be replacing one right-winger with one that's even more of a right-winger

6. Toomey is very beatable in a general. Spectre just isn't
also you've got to think that the Whitehouse would not be thrilled about campaigning with a real right-winger in a state they need to run as moderate in. And every vote counts in Pennsylvania in the presidential election, every vote we NEED.

7. The Mechanics of Doing This
Our primary here in Pennsylvania will be held on April 27, 2004. Pennsylvania's primaries are, indeed, closed - which means that you can only vote in the Republican primaries if you're registered as a Republican. If you want to change party affiliation, you need to do it no more than 30 days before the primary.

That said, I wouldn't recommend voting for Toomey. He's a freakin' psycho.

10. In order of conservatism...
1) Toomey and Santorum (tied)
2) Ashcroft
3) Attilla the Hun

I don't think this state can handle Sphinctorum X2. If the damn Democratic party in theis state would ever wake up, they could basically wipe out the Repugs in every metro area of the state.

Bush has no love for Arlen, because he is too moderate. The key is to get a Dem in though before the GOP pours a mountain of cash here for the '06 when Sphinctorum is up. '06 will be huge because Sphinctorum is #3 in the party.

14. Toomey would lose to Hoeffel
Hoeffel is positioned as a moderate and Toomey is so far to the right that I don't think swing voters would conciveably vote for him. It makes me wonder how Santorum was even elected to begin with.

16. Actually I would rather go up against Specter
He is prime for plucking. Six terms? people may feel it is time for a change as long as there is a qualified candidate to replace him--such as Hoeffel. That is one of the ways we got rid of Roth in Delaware--time for new blood.

Besides I'm not convinced Toomey would be a pushover. Afterall Pennsylvania has proved it can elect a very bigoted ultra-conservative. Toomey would fire up the conservative base while they may sit on their hands if Specter is the nominee especially if it gets to be an ugly primary.

He was elected in 1980.
