Sen. Dorgan endorses Obama!!!
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 08:49 PM by usregimechange
WASHINGTON - Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota endorsed presidential candidate Barack Obama on Wednesday, citing his record on trade.

"Senator Obama has never felt ... that NAFTA was good for America," Dorgan said in a campaign conference call with reporters.

Dorgan said Obama has supported key trade issues. "He and I feel the same way. We both believe in trade and plenty of it. We just insist it that it be fair to our country — the rules be fair."

NAFTA, the free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, is unpopular with blue-collar workers whose votes are critical in the Democratic primary Tuesday in Ohio.

3. And Stephanie Herseth of South Dakota
has now endorsed Obama too. This makes a clean sweep of all of South Dakota's superdelegates that have so far been chosen--six out of six are supporting Obama. South Dakota gets one more superdelegate, but (s)he hasn't been chosen yet, that will happen at the state convention.

6. This is a good, substantive endorsement for Obama
Dorgan is one of the good guys on trade, a fighter for fair trade and getting his endorsement helps Obama. Many of the endorsements that get ink are meaningless but this is not one of them, especially before Ohio.

10. A significant endorsement
Sen. Byron has been one of the unsung heroes in the Senate regarding important issues like Trade and Corporate Power.

Getting Dorgan's endorsement should send a signal. He is basically a liberal populist on matters of Wealth and Power. If he is comfortable supporting Obama, that is very reassuring regarding Obama, from a liberal and progressive viewpoint.

Dorgan has been a consistent and hard-working advocate on many of these economic issues that are important.

Although not especially charismatic or attention-getting, Dorgan has been working tirelessly for more responsible trade policies for years, long before it was cool. He's been on the Senate floor constantly pointing out the screw-ups of our "free trade" policies and proposing rational alternatives.

Dorgan has also been a strong critic of corporate power over the years. I remember, for example, in the 90's hearing him railing against media monopolization and deregulation when it was still a dirty little secret among the Washington Elite.

So this is a significant endorsement.
