On last nights PBS News Hour, Dean calls for w's impeachment (no "I" word)
About 6:20 into this audio of his interview with Margaret Warner, he states:
That is not someone who is capable of being President of the United States and exerting meaningful leadership in this country.

<snip>

I believe that we need a commission of independent inquiry to find out what the President knew and when he knew it. I think this calls into question the capacity of this President to serve us any longer as President of the United States, and I think it's very fortunate an election is coming up, where the American people will make their judgment. The President's credibility and his honesty is now in question.
In the interview, Dean made clear he was speaking for himself and not John Kerry. Kerry is therefore now free to make whatever use of this bombshell that will best suit his campaign.

(I transcribed this segment by hand. The full transcript should be available at the main News Hour link some time today.)

1. I agree with Dean.
Now to state the old mantra, how many lives did a blowjob cost? None

How many lives did Bush Cost? About 4,500 and counting.

2. Absolutely. Someone had to be the first major figure to say it,
and I guess he decided he might as well be the one.

5. His statement was dynamite
and after he completed it, he looked into the camera with the steadiest, most level gaze I've ever see from any one on television news.

6. I am really starting to like this guy so much! Jeeze sometimes I think
I am brain dead, I always liked Dean and would have supported him if he was nomn, but thought Kerry or Clark were a stronger candidate. Go Governor Dean someone needs to say what you are saying. Keep saying what you are saying our country needs you! (most Americans don't know it yet) Lets hope Dean can continue to drive W down. Will Dean be our 76 Reagan- the guy we should have voted for to face W.

13. Same here. He's a true benefit to the party.
In terms of electability (which is everything this election, imho), I was uncomfortable with him as our nominee, and still would be. But the guy is awesome as a spokesperson for Democratic values. I think he'll go far.

8. Dean is proving valuable in the strategic part of the campaign,
and he KNOWS it.

He knows the press will listen to him, and he knows how to work them well.

I wasn't a supporter of his, but I'll give him kudos now: He is committed 100% to ending the BFEE, and he is a keen, cool operative.

Go, Dr. Gov!

9. Yes, he did. Just did not use the word.
"Are you speaking for John Kerry"

"No, I am speaking for myself. You did not ask me on here to speak for John." That is from memory, but pretty close.

18. The guy ROCKS don't he MF?!
OH man.

Ya know, I think Dean has found his *calling* in this election. Were he the front runner, he'd have to be mum on much of this. And now he's able to TELL IT LIKE IT IS! And, the media is giving him a voice.

Dean will be an instrumental player in the defeat of * in 2004. I am lovin every minute of it. I can only hope that one day, in my lifetime we will see a President Dean.

22. Dean. Friggin'. Rocks.
You're absolutely right about his position now. It is his calling. And I think Kerry actually deserves credit for knowing it's Dean's calling, for not backing away from him. There's a picture of them together at GWU where they actually look like they're enjoying being in each other's company!

28. Yes BW, it is so interesting to see how this is all playing out.
I maintained early on that the Rethugs would rue the day they helped take Dean out of the nomination.

Howard Dean will be a far more dangerous man to the R's without having to watch his step.

He will also continue to work for the fundimental change that is so very needed in this country and in our political system.

I look forward to following his new *calling* as you say.

Dean's said what had to be said and did it in a serious and thoughtful way. He also gave Kerry the ability to distance himself from these comments if he chooses.

14. "The President's credibility and his honesty is now in question."
Was'nt bush going to use his *unassailable* credibility as one of his main campaign themes?

We at DU knew bush had a total void in the credibility department, but I think the events of this week have made that theme useless (to bush) in the campaign.

but did NOT mention what he said last night. I suspect this interview will be ignored altogether.

26. There is a pattern when Dean says something.
At first there is almost no response. It takes a while, then drip drip.

The Kerry rep and Begala did, to their credit, take up for Dean. There was huge applause for him.

The problem is that Begala is too little too late. What he does now is just crumbs thrown in our direction.

I believe the response will come. The pattern is that he says it way ahead of the others, but it does get played later.

42. When he continues to speak out and try for change, I think of this article
Howard Dean: The UnNader?

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4522514/
"It's a rare man whose real interest is the welfare of the people, even if there's not much personal gain. Maybe you are that man."

SNIP..."Unlike most catalyst candidates, who make things happen and then disappear, you could use your influence to bring young people to the polls, to convince them that what happens in the Oval Office really will affect their lives and that they have a stake in affecting the outcome. You could convince like-minded independents that there is a real difference between the two parties and point out where their true interests lie.

Neither of those groups believes in altruism in politics. Hell, no one believes in altruism in politics. But wouldn't it be all of a piece with your historic insurgent candidacy if you created a historic altruistic role? There probably wouldn't be anything in it for you except the knowledge that you'd done something important for what you believed. But actually witnessing a politician doing that might rev up the voters just as much as your strange and improbable campaign did.END SNIP

All kudos to Dean, but I wonder how many folks remember that Cynthia McKinney was eviscerated in this forum two years ago for saying very nearly the same thing.

This is a baseless accusation and a slur against a great woman and leader. So you damn well better have proof when you say something like this.
