Dean gets a standing ovation at the Democratic Unity Dinner!
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 12:52 PM by mzmolly
Dean was the only former candidate to generate this type of response.

I thought this deserved a thread because there is much discussion about this.

Bill Clinton paid respect to all the candidates, and appeared to have forgotten Dean. I was totally shocked. I couldn't believe that he would disrespect Dean like that! Publically!

I was wondered if I simply didn't hear BC mention Dean, as doing such a thing seemed so unlikely for him.

Then a moment later, when Bill Clinton was talking about the horrors of the Bush admin, he said ... I left out somebody before, and I did so on purpose, Howard Dean. This is the guy who made it ok, to really take it to the Bush administration, and this party owes him a debt of graditude for that... Then major applause broke out and Dean got a standing ovation! Dean was singled out as a very meaningful part of this election. And, he deserved to be.

It was fantastic!!!!

I am paraphrasing for Bill Clinton, so if anyone has a different recollection, feel free to share.

For those that didn't catch this, please tune in to cspan for the re-airing. :)

4. Yes it was. I really think the party appreciates him as they should.
Sure makes staying in the Democratic Party more palatable for this Dean supporter ;)

3. Carter also gave major thanks to Dean
it was one of the first things he said, IIRC. Dean got huge recognition last night. I'd love to see him as VP :)

5. OH meee toooo!! Dean would make a great VP, but I kinda think it might
be Graham.

We'll hafta wait and see. ;)

I missed Carters recognition as I didn't see the entire speech. I hope to catch it later.

17. I would too but...
A Massachusetts-Vermont ticket would just seem a little too "northeastern liberal." Although I am not sure what's wrong with northeastern liberal.... it supposedly won't play well with the masses :-P

27. And I call you biased
Why is it not OK to make fun of any other group of people in the country EXCEPT Southerners?
Look - there are some VERY intelligent people from down here - in fact, the last three Democratic presidents were from down here - Carter, Clinton and Gore (remember, he actually WAS elected).
If you want to ask why Southerners don't like New England liberals, that's one thing. It's a reasonable question. But to say we're still ticked off about the Civil War is pushing it a bit too far! Mostly because it's not true. It's a cultural difference in lifestyle - not a beef over a war that was fought more than 100 years ago.

28. I was born in the South, lived there my first 32 years
in the capitol of the Confederacy, no less. I've seen and heard enough yankee-vs-rebel, south will rise again, forget hell, etc, to have some basis to make my statement.

Everyone I have ever loved in my life came from the south, that has no bearing on what I said in my last post. It doesn't apply to every single person who lives there.

My post was specifically in response to a post about people who won't vote for candidates from the Northeast. If you are NOT someone who would reject a Kerry/Dean ticket because neither is from the South, then my post is not about you. If you ARE a person who would reject a non-Southern ticket, please tell us why.

9. DOCTOR Dean gave our party a badly-needed spine transplant!
We owe a debt of gratitude to Howard Dean that we will never be able to fully repay; when we were downcast and covering ourselves in sackcloth and ashes, Gov. Dean had the guts to speak a simple truth: The Emeperor of Crawford has no clothes.

Good on ya, Howard, and God bless! :loveya:

13. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dr. Dean
...that's for 'very sure'. Let's also think of (and thank) other Dems who showed courage and stamina during these difficult times. In particular, I'm thinking of Senator Byrd of West Virginia, who gave SEVERAL eloquent speeches - among his most memorable is this one from Oct. 17, 2003: The Emperor Has No Clothes

When he was smeared by the WH, he not only fought back, but showed them to be the low-life slimemongers that they really are. Dick Durbin has got a set of brass ones, and should be our next leader in the Senate.

I am glad Dean got the props he did last night, he deserved every bit of it. But I could not help but note the hypocrasy and sanctimony of it all after the lengths they went to help derail him. Nice dinner, but it didn't give me a warm and fuzzy with the party yet. That might take long.

29. ** Well because they were trying to win? **
I am not of the belief that there was a vast democratic conspiracy to take down Dean. I think the only conspiracy was amongst those that didn't care for him.

Nothing unusual at all about that. Happens every primary season. ;)

He was the boy in the fairy tale when everyone else cooing and praising the emperor.

He got hell for it big time, if I remember.

They still ridicule him for criticizing the pretzledent in wartime in a war the pretzledent created on the backs of lies and other's peoples deaths - and STILL makes fun OF them!

Howard Dean should be the nominee. He revs up the party and has the most comprehensive plan for recovering the economy, installing health care, creating jobs and reinstating a sane diplomatic relationship with the rest of the world.

I think this election is a do or die for the democratic party. Kerry has got to step up.

37. Were it not for Howard Dean
John Kerry wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning this election. He's singularly uninspiring, even when he's stealing all of Dean's best lines.

It's Howard Dean who inspired thousands of Democrats to get involved, really involved in the party and in politics. Hundreds of candidates are running for office in local elections because of him.

I was just at the Kerry rally in Kansas City and a significant number of the people there were originally Dean people who showed up, not because we're enamored of Kerry (although we'll vote for him in November) but because we'd learned that Bush supporters were planning to show up, and we weren't about to let them spoil the party.

I just caught this as I was watching the tape of the dinner:
"We are so unified that the DLC wants to give Howard Dean a lifetime membership."

Now that is funny! There was a huge roar on that one, considering their most recent articles. Hope it broke the ice a little.

I thought it was funny.

39. Dr. Dean deserves our respect and our thanks!
I remember November 2002, and how downcast we all were, as a party. Then, in early 2003, I remember this lone voice out in the 'wilderness' saying, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more!". That voice belonged to Dr. Howard Dean, and it served as a spine-stiffening war cry to us, because here was someone who wasn't downcast and broken-hearted, but ready to fight the evil bastards who had seized control of our Republic.

I salute you, Dr. Howard Dean, and I hope we see MUCH more of you for a long time to come! :loveya:
