BRING THEM HOME
Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 01:45 AM by frogcycle
These are the US troops killed since the Iowa Caucus. This does not address those maimed, nor those further fucked up in the head. Nor does it address the Iraqis killed as a result of our continuing presence.

Rightly or wrongly, we have narrowed the choices for a replacement for gwb. It seems that nothing will stop this as long as he is in office. Unlike the 2006 election, in which the dems sent to DC could only do so much "without the votes," the next pres will be CinC at noon on Jan 20 2009. He/she can fix this starting that afternoon. I don't give a rats ass any more which one gets the nomination - they had just better damned well beat that republican motherfucker and BRING THEM HOME. it is job one, and they had better fucking do it.

That is all.

4. yeah
And one of these clowns posturing for the nomination could take a fucking break and introduce a bill REQUIRING the military to buy an embalming machine and send it to Iraq. They don't want to spend a couple of thousand bucks on it, so they pack the bodies - or what's left of them - in ice when they ship them home. But they don't always do a great job and the shipment is not always real prompt. One funeral director said the condition was the worst he had ever seen. He wouldn't let the family see. Must have sat on the tarmac in the sun in Iraq, I guess. Then the casket gets unloaded with a forklift instead of any semblance of honor guard. The Patriot Guards usually show up as volunteer escorts, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude for doing what bush's government should be doing. The ones who come home maimed struggle to get care... The other day a soldier with traumatic brain injury died in a military hospital in Kentucky - he'd been given yet another prescription for his headaches, took it, it interacted with the rest of what he was taking. He died sitting in a chair in his hospital room. They found him THREE DAYS LATER when his wife demanded someone find out why he was not returning her calls.

OK, it's not ALWAYS that bad, but damnit, this continues, and the public is generally oblivious - the body count is down, so Iraq is no longer a fucking issue.

Well, MSM, and "We the People" look again at these faces and tell me they aren't an issue.

They say the republican candidate is going to make Iraq an issue. Well I damned well hope he does. And the dem candidate had better fucking give him both barrels.

Katrina is forgotten, 4476 dead soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines are forgotten, the USDA doesn't want to inspect food, the FDA doesn't want to inspect drugs, the FAA doesn't want to inspect planes...
but I can only carry 3 oz of toothpaste on a plane, barefoot.

The squabbling has to stop. The country is on the brink. Or over the brink. We no longer have a federal government.

Sadly, the first thing that came to mind after reading your comments was an article I read last year:

~snip~

Consider the case of Grayson's client Bud Conyers, a big, bearded 43-year-old who lives with his ex-wife and her nine children, four of them his, in Enid, Oklahoma. Conyers worked in Iraq as a driver for Kellogg, Brown & Root. Spun off by Halliburton as an independent concern in April, KBR is the world's fifth-largest construction company. Before the war started, the Pentagon awarded it two huge contracts: one, now terminated, to restore the Iraqi oil industry, and another, still in effect, to provide a wide array of logistical-support services to the U.S. military.

In the midday heat of June 16, 2003, Conyers was summoned to fix a broken refrigerated truck—a "reefer," in contractor parlance—at Log Base Seitz, on the edge of Baghdad's airport. He and his colleagues had barely begun to inspect the sealed trailer when they found themselves reeling from a nauseating stench. The freezer was powered by the engine, and only after they got it running again, several hours later, did they dare open the doors.

The trailer, unit number R-89, had been lying idle for two weeks, Conyers says, in temperatures that daily reached 120 degrees. "Inside, there were 15 human bodies," he recalls. "A lot of liquid stuff had just seeped out. There were body parts on the floor: eyes, fingers. The goo started seeping toward us. Boom! We shut the doors again." The corpses were Iraqis, who had been placed in the truck by a U.S. Army mortuary unit that was operating in the area. That evening, Conyers's colleague Wallace R. Wynia filed an official report: "On account of the heat the bodies were decomposing rapidly.… The inside of the trailer was awful."

Thank you for posting this, it brings it all home for me, and how important it is to see this through.

I cannot stop crying here, all those soldiers who have lost their lives in a war that never EVER should have happened. Some of them had photos with their families, and it made it even more real. Very gut wrenching, what their families must be going through.

I know we may have issues with either Democrat, but they pale in comparison to what GW and his cronies have done to this country. Our soldiers do not have a choice, even if they feel a war is wrong in their hearts, they do it no questions asked because their Commander in Chief orders them to do so. How dare GW...I am so angry at him, sometimes I don't know what to do with that anger. My heart and my prayers go out to all the families of these soldiers who lost their lives over a stupid war.

Please DU, lets bring them home! You have the best chance for that with either Democrat.

Gawd I can't stop crying now

48. the pdf isn't great
since the links don't work; also a couple of piclinks (including Pat Tilman's!) were broken. But it does illustrate what I can do quite readily. I can make a version without the links, paginate better, selecting by state or by month, in just a few seconds. I could select by city. I can make it more like the OP, with the additional, larger pics displayed. If you want a poster with all the fatalities from your town, I can make you a jpg you can get printed at Kinkos or somewhere.

Anyone who, like Gateley, wants material for any individual grass roots "awareness" effort, feel free to PM me with requests.

32. You have a point?
Actually, there have been eight killed in Afghanistan this year. We're staying in Iraq too. No matter who gets elected, there will be some sort of presence in both countries, and there will be casualties. And if we ever engage the real Al Queda, there will be casualties. But there needn't be the pointless meat grinder that is the Iraq occupation.

35. My point is that in talking with Obama supporters IRL.....
Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 03:17 AM by Riley133
Afghanistan and Iraq are considered to be one and the same, and there seems to be the presumption that ending the war will mean all troops will come home - and that's not the case.

I truly didn't mean to offend, but that conversation was fresh in my mind.

Carry on, and thanks for clarifying that for me.

46. yes, all too many partisans
seem to think that by supporting "their" candidate who leans more in a given direction on one or more points than do the others, that their election will make everything ok. I recall a woman saying in 2004 she was voting for bush despite all the things she disliked, because he was a repuiblican and "republicans are for big business' and she worked for a big company so she was voting "to keep my job."

It just ain't that simple. Of course the killing won't stop early in the afternoon of Jan 20, and bringing them home will be complicated. It still should remain as the #1 issue in this circus we call an election process. Joe Biden had it right. Iraq is the big rock in the road blocking progress on anything else. The fact that the daily casualty rate is down does not change that. We are still hemorrhaging money going to Blackwater, Halliburton, et. al.; they are still making obscene profits; we are still building a huge "embassy" and planning permanent bases.

The drop in fatalities has enabled these bastards to divert the attention of the public - "oh, look at the shiny object" - to quibbling over how mandates on health insurance will be enforced as if either program was going to be dictated intact without congressional hearings and compromise after compromise. They spent 16 minutes of probably the final debate quibbling over that like it made a nickels worth of difference. I haven't checked, but there is a good chance one of these people died that day, maybe DURING that petty bullshit.

While the deaths are gut-wrenching, the maimings are horrific, the real, fundamental issue is that, as I said in the OP, we no longer have a constitutional federal government. This shit goes on because we have a dictatorship. Pure and simple. Bush does what bush wants and nobody gets in his way. And none of the remaining candidates have the guts to really come out and say that. They talk either about rubber-stamping his shit (the republican) or freaking "reaching out" to "bring us together" and reach compromise. The carnage in Iraq is representative of the final death throes of our form of government. And as the administration, with its complicit media refocuses the public on other issues, it is just like a magician on stage diverting the audiences attention.

We desperately need "adult supervision" and those who could provide it have been marginalized and rejected by people more interested in shiny objects.

All We the People can do at this point is keep demanding that the REAL issues stay in the forefront. These deaths are tragic, and I would not be maintaining Zeitlangers if I were not touched by each and every one. But even so, the bigger issue is the death of our form of government. Joe knows that removing that "rock in the road" is not a simplistic quick fix so everything will be alright; it is the opening shot in a counterinsurgency to take back America.

They did not deserve to die and had so much more to give the world.

But the were never given a chance.

All because of a delusional politician.

While GWB recovers from a lifelong drug party, entering step X of his 12 step program, he sends thousands to die. He has drug addict Rush and nicotine addict Coulter supporting their deaths every chance they get.

How could we let these assholes into any position of power, wealth, or authority. Are we sadomasochists? This has got to end.

61. And I'm struck by the fact...
that one is from the town I grew up in and another is from the town my wife grew up in. It's tough to see the names, it's tougher to see the faces, but seeing the faces of the children, girl/boyfriends, wives/husbands, families/friends they left behind is the real kicker. This needs to be kept front of collective mind. K&R

57. The families go through all sorts of hell
parents losing children is awful. Young wives with young children losing a husband - or in a few cases husbands losing a wife - is even tougher. These people's lives are shattered; they have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. A lot of people struggle to stay "patriotic" because they can't deal with the idea that the person died "in vain." I read their quotes in the paper and somehow I hurt even more for them than for the ones who lash out at bush and the pointlessness. Because deep down, I think they know, and they are conflicted. They need to get angry, but don't let themselves because they don't want the reality.

4456 is a big number - a lot of people killed - with some subset "justifiable" in the initial action in Afghanistan, and even some of the ongoing activities, both there and in Iraq. Most, though, are just cannon fodder for bush's ego. Anyway, while 4456 seems a big number, in fact it is tiny compared to the US population. Look at the count by state on my Zeitlangers site. States like Utah or Wyoming or N Dakota. With 13 total from Wyoming, how many people in that entire (admittedly small population) state know a family who lost someone? Do you think there is any sort of support group for them? Those 13 families are dealing with as big a "hole in their lives" as anyone else. But do they get the impression that the rest of the world cares? They hear that Iraq is no longer a major issue in the presidential campaign. But NOTHING HAS CHANGED since their family member was killed. So if it is no longer an issue, that means the US - We the People - are saying to them "tough shit, pal, but life goes on - get over it."

And there are more families - many more - dealing with someone on a feeding tube in a burn unit, or multiple amputee, or maybe reasonably recovered but horribly disfigured from burns, and they get no press. Local press, yes. Some of these guys - the ones alive - are local heros, with the whole town rooting for them, following their progress.

But for We the People as a whole? Move on, nothing to see here, look at the shiny object.

I get several visitors a day to Zeitlangers who come by way of a google or yahoo or whatever search on a name. Some are from several years back. My site turns up at the top of their search list because of the way I include names in the html, and trick the search engines into crawling it frequently. They come, they go to their person's page, and I assume in many cases they then follow the links I have provided. So I sort of provide an enhanced search capability. Finding that there are several sites out there paying tribute may help just a little. I hope so. That's why I do it.

58. Thank you for your heartfelt dedication
and your our right about our society, if they don't have someone involved it does not affect them.
I would like to share a story with you
My son is over in Germany and works for MWR as a civilian.
He is in charge of Reintegration of the soldiers returning from Irag, it's a week long process.
Usually about 60 to 70 on days of returning, he is very dedicated, he is not much older than the soldiers.
There is alot of paperwork and guidance for the soldiers at this point, really a very emotional position.
One soldier comes in and has one eye and half od his face is mangled, burned. My son is talking to him getting all the info, and at the end.
The soldier looks at him and thanks him. my son says for what.
For looking at me, in my eye, and not turning away. Treating me like a person
They both started bawling.

His caring concern is incredible--what an awesome son you raised!

Words simply fail me about this stupid pointless "war" and all the damage being done to our courageous troops and the Iraqis whose lives have been sacrificed and homeland destroyed beyond repair.

Damn Bush and his minions. I wish I could say damn them to the fires of eternal hell but I no longer believe in it, and even if I did, it would not come close to the punishment those evil monsters deserve.

Blessings to you, your son, and all those whose lives he touches following the hell they've been through.

And why so many "Non-combat related" that are "under investigation? My heart breaks for the soldiers, their families, the innocent Iraqis. My nephew returned physically unscathed - mentally, not so much. He was lucky, of course, but it was all so unnecessary.

69. They report "under investigation"
and then you never hear any more. Every now and then if I go back and search on someone months or years later, I find an article describing the final report. Some are self-inflicted wounds. They NEVER report that early on. Some are friendly fire. There are also murders. Those get reported as "under investigation" as well. The details dribble out, but there are no press releases.

I did a search on "under investigation" and only found 43 - but I have only been recording the descriptions for the past couple of years.

I have found a couple of cases where families contest the finding of suicide; they feel it was foul play but the military disagrees.

Glad to hear your nephew came back in one piece. Get him help for the mental part. PTSD is real, it is debilitating, and it is dangerous. And most importantly, it is not something to be embarrassed by. Too many think they have to be "tough." They need to understand it, understand what is happening, that their brain is playing tricks on them, and they can conquer it when they really understand it. It is no different from an astronaut needing to regain the ability to walk, or somebody having to get over jet lag. The body reacts to stuff, and it needs to be managed. Mental responses are just as real. The trauma that causes it is not necessarily being attacked or even being in danger. It can be witnessing stuff, seeing a buddy blown up, or a child run over. It can be guilt over not having done more. It can even be the trauma of thinking you are about to go home and then getting extended 3 months. That has pushed more than one out of the "control" zone. You spend 12 months gritting your teeth, doing your job, counting the days, and then they spring an extension on you.

And those who have had 3 and 4 tours... I can't imagine. They have to have developed incredible defenses against such a hellish life, which probably translate to their not being good company in the real world. They need help, we need them to get help, or we will all suffer their eventual breakdowns with them. This is an essential part of "doing a war" that these bastards just don't give a crap about.
