Clinton Planning For Life After the Alamo
Clinton Planning For Life After the Alamo

by Glenn Thrush

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Clinton campaign is no longer counting on a Texas win and is desperately seeking a rationale for soldiering on if they lose the Lone Star State.

(They are still sanguine about Ohio despite a Reuters/Zogby/C-Span poll today showing them deadlocked in both states.)

Back in the good old days (three weeks ago), when she still held a double-digit advantage in Texas, Clinton's brain trust was confidently predicting she would run the table on March 4th and overcome Barack Obama's widening lead in delegates. Privately, they conceded that losing EITHER Texas or Ohio would be fatal. One staffer told me a single loss would create a "death spiral" -- an avalanche of super delegates, a donor revolt, defections from her exhausted staff and the sudden appearance of a delegation of Wise Men and Women pressuring her to quit for the good of the party. Then Bill Clinton more or less endorsed that thesis in public.

Amazingly, Hillary Clinton's top aides -- Mark Penn, Howard Wolfson and Harold Ickes -- are now behaving as if those calculations never existed. The first sign of the shift came last week, when Ickes declared that Clinton would have to reassess her plans only if she lost BOTH Texas and Ohio. Then came a Friday conference call in which Wolfson -- to the utter amazement of reporters listening in -- said the "onus" was on Obama to win all four March 4th states.

Most in the campaign still think she can eke out a win but Wolfson’s comments were clearly a signal that the former first lady intends to keep fighting if she loses the Alamo.

1. too late. I suspect people will ask her to drop out if she loses TX
and superdelegates will flood over to obama.

6. If she loses TX and doesn't drop out, the superdelegates
might just send a message and head towards Obama in droves. That'd be one way to show their disappointment.

The media are only now starting to turn on Obama. Who knows how voters may feel about him come August?

11. She will be "encouraged" to close up shop after March 4. The party elders will not risk losing the
GE so she can continue her ego-quest. There are very few who cannot see what harm she is doing, for little gain except her own. Its over March 5. Count on it :-)

... the expert? She can do what she damn well pleases, but no matter what she does or doesn't do, she'll be criticized.

I never saw piling on like this, among Democrats, on a Democrat.

Hopefully, this battle will then end before the party is torn to shreds. imho

4. They are insane.
They lost about 5 states ago, and they won't let go. They seem intent on burning every bridge they have, and doing as much damage to Obama as is humanly possible.

It's a pity that the law doesn't allow for recalling a Senator.

24. Maybe somebody needs to tell you that it's not the number of states ...
... that determine the winner. It's the number of delegates.

Funny that you should get that confused. Your candidate is blowing smoke, and that's how he won so many of those states and the delegates he has. Clinton leads among DEMOCRATS.
A Number You Probably Haven't Seen
Obama, despite being ahead among pledged delegates, has fewer total votes among people who identify themselves as Democrats. (He has 7,392,809 votes; Clinton has 8,229,063.) That gives Clinton as lead with 52 percent of Democrats. Lanier also breaks the numbers down by race and points out that Obama has won white Democrats in only two states: New Mexico and Illinois… It helps you understand why the party gives so much power to its 796 superdelegates. If they didn’t, independents and Republicans could essentially hijack their election.

we lost the Alamo. I  when I see national politicians comparing their battles to the Alamo. I'm sure Hillary thought she was going to fight the Battle of the Alamo...too bad she planned on being on the OTHER side of the walls....

BTW, tomorrow is Texas Independence Day. :patriot:

It's clear that Obama has the momentum. Hell, he's pretty much won me over, and I'm a difficult crusty old lesbian socialist pagan who is not persuaded by his pretty talk in the least.

But geez, is it necessary to be so mean about a fellow Democrat?

15. People are getting peeved over Hillary's inability to be a good sport.
A normal politician would have closed up shop long ago. She seems unable to admit defeat, though, and is damaging herself in the process, as well as attempting to damage Obama.

She could have had a bright future in Dem politics at one point, but at this rate, she's signing her own warrant.

for her own sake she should exit with dignity. Does she want to be like Hukabee and continue on looking like a joke. Hillary has a future beyond this, to keep her Senate seat and possibly another run for president and she isn't doing her career any good to keep on when it's impossible.

31. Now she is telling Texans that her First Lady visits to 80 countries
qualifies her to be the better Dem candidate in November. Maybe she can go run for office in one of those 80 countries?

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/030208dnpolclinton.1188a434.html

Earlier, Mrs. Clinton continued to stick to her theme of national security. She rejected Mr. Obama’s suggestion that her campaign is resorting to fear mongering to try and win votes. “I don’t think the people in Texas scare all that easily,” she said.

She cited her own experience of traveling to 80 countries during the Clinton administration and said it better equips her to compete with likely Republican nominee John McCain, a Vietnam War hero with long foreign-policy experience in the Senate.

'If Senator Obama is unwilling to engage me on national security, how is he going to engage Senator McCain?" she asked.

Mrs. Clinton commended Mr. Obama for his stance against the Iraq war in 2002 but said he never followed up on his anti-war sentiments.

4837131, In Texas, Clinton Gets Girl Power
Posted by sueragingroz on Sat Mar-01-08 05:39 PM

Amy Chozick reports on the presidential race from Dallas.

Sen. Hillary Clinton is hoping some good old-fashioned girl power can help her in the pivotal contests in Ohio and Texas on Tuesday.

Today in San Antonio Clinton stopped by a downtown hotel for a quick fund-raiser before traveling to Fort Worth and Dallas for rallies. The donors, who contributed an average of $250 and brought in roughly $200,000, got a surprise visit from feminist icon Gloria Steinem.

The activist and founder of Ms. magazine gave a nod to the few men in the audience promising to give them protection from the “upcoming revolution.” She said there are more women who identify as feminists than as Republicans.

She defended Clinton’s vote to authorize the war in Iraq, saying both former presidential nominees John Edwards and Sen. Joseph Biden voted the same way and were not attacked for it. Steinem said the storm of criticism Clinton has received from Sen. Barack Obama and others over her vote is a “double standard.”

Steinem recounted the history of South Texas and the fighting between the Spanish and the Native Americans. “Peace came in the form of a woman,” she said, implying that it can come again with Clinton.

It was a “you-go-girl” kind of day for Clinton, who also picked up the endorsement of “Desperate Housewives” star and native Texan Eva Longoria Parker and “Working Girl” star Melanie Griffith. The two actresses will be joining Clinton in Texas on Monday as she holds a live interactive “town hall” during which voters across Texas can ask questions via satellite.
