That's It - I'm DONE!!!
Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 08:09 PM by NanceGreggs
I have been posting here since the fall of 2005, and I have now absolutely had it!

I am sick and tired of the endless fence-sitting, equivocating, and complete lack of commitment my fellow DUers have demonstrated towards the Democratic candidates.

If you have an opinion about Hillary or Obama, it’s time you got up off your virtual ass and said so!

How many threads have I opened only to see comments like, “Excuse me, if I may, I’d like to say something that might be taken as a negative comment about Hillary,” or, “I hesitate to broach the topic, but there was something Obama said recently that causes me concern”?

Jesus H. Christ, people – out with it! And for the sake of all that is holy, if you can’t think of anything negative to say about one of the two remaining candidates, don’t let that stop you!

Where is your creativity? Are we just going to collectively admit that we aren’t as imaginative as the Freepers when it comes to making shit up? Are we going to sit back and allow RW pundits and TV and radio “personalities” to spew absolute garbage about either of our potential nominees without besting them at their own game? Are we going to let things like facts stand in the way of a really good story about one of our own, a completely bogus story we can easily make-up ourselves?

Where is your sense of decency? If you still have one, you are obviously not with the program!

I am particularly pissed-off with people who continue to post OPs about the so-called important issues we should be looking at as we choose who to nominate for the Presidency of the United States – yadda, yadda, big deal position – things like Iraq, the economy, education, foreign policy, and all of that other inconsequential bullshit that is currently clogging our very own internetz tubes.

Don’t you types (and don’t pretend we don’t all know you are!) have more important things to discuss? I don’t want to hear about Hillary’s healthcare program – I want to hear about how she’s a corporate shill in bed with the pharmaceutical industry, and I want details about those ties, no matter how tangential they might be! I am not the least bit interested in Obama’s plans for unifying the nation – I want to savor every last baseless inference about his madrassa years and the significance of his middle name!

So you’re a Hillary supporter, and all you’ve done is phone-banked on her behalf, without dredging up some anti-Obama rumor to post here? You call yourself an Obama supporter, and you’ve contributed money to his campaign without starting a thread about Hillary’s unsubstantiated nefarious dealings with organized crime? Yeah, go tell yourself you’re truly committed to the cause – someone out there will believe you.

But I, for one, am not taken in by your alleged support of someone you supposedly believe in, while you just can't bring yourself to utterly decimate the fellow-Democrat they're running against.

Of course, the posters who have really put me over the edge are the ones who insist on reproducing entire articles about the candidates, instead of just lopping-off the stuff that might reflect negatively on their personal choice.

There should be a special alert button for these “context police”, who demand that verbatim quotes be presented in full, without the addition of their own comments like at least, that’s what I understood her to mean, or I’m sure this is what he really meant, if you read between the lines!

Well, give me a big, fuckin’ personal break! What next? Having to stick to facts instead of innuendo? Being forced by the Admins to adhere to things like fairness and even-handedness? Being shut-down by power-hungry mods who have a TS quota to meet, and are lying-in-wait for people who attempt to go over the three-flamebait-threads per-day limit?

Enough is enough, people! If you can’t be bothered to insult not only the candidate who rivals your own choice but his/her supporters as well, if you can’t find the time in your busy schedule to join in the name-calling of your fellow DUers, if you can’t make the effort to find the tiniest soundbyte about your candidate’s rival and turn it into a full-blown scandal-de-jour worthy of intense scrutiny and possibly a Congressional investigation, you obviously just don’t care!

As for me, I’m done. I have seen one too many facts cited, I have heard one too many calls for common sense and reason, I have read one too many admonishments that we should act civilly and responsibly.

And I’ll be damned if I’m going to let common courtesy stand in the way of our God-given right to say the nastiest things we can possibly think of (or make up) about the candidates, and each other.

Let me just add that :sarcasm: thingy for the satire impaired, along with a sincere apology to those who were elated at the thought of my actual departure!

Ain’t going anywhere! :hi:

Please, Ma'am. I fear for what you may be starting here. Perhaps, if it would not be too much trouble, (and I take a terrible liberty here to which I hope you will not take offense) but could I--if I may--suggest that you might wish to reconsider your position?

I admit to feeling a bit nervous about all this, not that I am blaming you for my own feelings.

Oh, dear, oh dear. Please, I beseech you not to find my manners lacking. As I state, I mean absolutely no offense to you, but ask that you merely might find it in your best interest to reconsider your position.

I find your manners lacking only in that they fail to hold back their true intentions, and boldly state their purpose without false humility and sense of purpose!

may be poorly shuttered from view, but here takes hold a greater fear that despite the fervent prayers offered to my blessed saviour each morn and vespers, I may arrive at end to find that my unnatural predilection to the invert's nature is too cumbersome and insurmountable a peak.

As you once invited me with generous kindness into your box at the opera, we may chance this entrance into a world of amenable pleasures afforded by the arts. And so herewith I accept your gracious invitation come Sunday next. ... upon receipt of your latest missive, surely I would not still have breath in my body sufficient to respond!

E'er now I have languished on this message board, bereft of hope (or the audacity thereof) of hearing the song you now so gallantly and surreptitiously whisper, like the sweetest strains, into my ear!

Take heart! I said to myself (no one else being in the vicinity at the time) as I inhaled the promise of your entreaty, and allowed its fragrance to permeate my very soul!

So then it is done. Come Sunday next and sup with me, and we shall dine and dance and pledge ourselves as bespoken, each to the other.

And I prithee, good sir, BYOB.

Had we not pledged that my multitude of previous husbands and lovers would be as off-limits a point of polite conversation as an endorsement of the Republican knave?

My reference to BYOB was obviously an invitation to supply an appropriate vintage to accompany the prepared victuals - and perhaps a small cheeroot of dubious origin to seal the bargain we have made this day.

I am offended by your ungentlemanly behaviour, sir - and cannot help but wonder why there's never a G-D fuckin' fainting couch handy when one needs one.

73. I am lost to all understanding of what may have occurred to reverse fortunes thus.
I have so oft listened with rapt attention to the descriptions you placed before me as earnest invitation.

The rich coral velvet of the interior, the finely formed lines of its appointments, flowing in an earthly guise that mimicked heavenly music. these rapturous paintings you formed with speech that so persuaded me to take into my pleasured heart such an offer are now as nothing but a rage? Why for, my dearest waving Periwinkle-beside-the-pond? Why? Why, why! Why, I shall again now ask my wee pudding-of-cloves-and-rosewater? And thrice again, why, my dearest thimble of carved silver and white camphor?

Have you a trial to conduct 'gainst our Mozart? Do you mean to require we shall sit astride the gutter as we listen to Don Giovanni? How can such an occurrence prosper? What event barring penury can now deny us entrance into your loge?

I am near to bereft.

But I'm still bringing the boy.

It would perhaps be best to wait for Ms. Greggs' consent about posting a poll which may bring unwarranted attention to her in manner to which she may find some discomfort.

I really really loved Molly Ivins a lot. When the stupid newspaper here stopped carrying her column, I cancelled my subscription.
Evidently a lot of people did as well, because her column returned 2 months later.

44. Please do not stop posting, you're the voice of sanity...
From your post:

"... I have heard one too many calls for common sense and reason, I have read one too many admonishments that we should act civilly and responsibly."

This is my pet peeve, Nance. People who keep complaining about the fighting and insulting the candidates. I don't like the people the Clintons have associated with for the past few years. I used to like Bill Clinton, but he has become, in my opinion, slimy. Hillary is the type of person who if she moved next door to me, I would move. She scares the shit out of me. She's been in Bush's pocket since she's been in. I don't sense that she has real empathy but is a pro at imitating the actions and words of truly sympathetic people.

Now is the time to state real opinions, as you would like to see, and would I. It's too late after we've lost another good candidate to the machinery that chews up wonderful candidates and tries to advance the worst.

56. That is absolutely BRILLIANT Fadedrose!
You've included all the elements of the kind of messages Nancy is so deftly attacking! Use of words like "slimy," or "shit," a wildly exaggerated expression of fear -- "If she moved in next door to me, I would move," the attribution of sociopathic traits -- "I don't sense she has real empathy" -- in someone you have probably only seen on TV. Bravo!

But don't you think this post of yours in support of Nancy's point is... well... a little OBVIOUS?

I've always tried to avoid posting what I posted in that nasty thing. But I figured it was supposed to sound sarcastic (but I actually told the truth). Telling the truth is in bad form here, but Nance's sarcasm hit a spot with me and maybe sometimes we should post feelings.

The facts have been posted over and over and everybody knows them. Still, people want to know why you don't like someone, and the facts get posted again and again.

71. A Hussain voice in the wilderness
Please don't go Nance. If you go, where will a newbie DUbie look for guidance? With the primary winds whipping in all directions, and whipping up on those daring enough to brave the keyboard and post. Those of us looking to your wise, yet sometimes pointed words, will be without a compass. As a former Boy Scout, being without your compass makes getting through the wilderness a lot tougher. Oh, you can survive the wilderness. It's just there are more chances to fall on your face and lose your way.

There is a storm coming and I for one would like to know which direction to head before it hits. You've been that beacon of light, that magnetic north we can gravitate towards. Without that shining light, I'll be looking for the moss, and living like someone on one of those reality shows where to survive you get paid to eat grubs, no thanks. :puke:

After surviving the multiple forest fires caused by the thousand points of light, after trudging through the muck and mire that acts like clean air and after being a child left behind, please don't leave us behind. Soon, with all the political clear-cutting, there may not be a wilderness for which we can get lost...

81. You had me going there, for the first few paragraphs
This where the lightbulb finally clicked on:

Where is your creativity? Are we just going to collectively admit that we aren’t as imaginative as the Freepers when it comes to making shit up? Are we going to sit back and allow RW pundits and TV and radio “personalities” to spew absolute garbage about either of our potential nominees without besting them at their own game? Are we going to let things like facts stand in the way of a really good story about one of our own, a completely bogus story we can easily make-up ourselves?

I've vented steam in your general direction in the past, but for the most part I really like what you write (and I say that with more than a touch of envy at your skill.) It would be a very sad day if your well-written reason is no longer with us.

This lady seems a little mad about something. There's a message here, but through all of the finger wagging and hen pecking...through all of the self righteous need to talk down to a whole community, it seems that the message has been lost.

What should we do now lady? Do you give any direction? Is it that we should not choose our words wisely when it is blatantly obvious over the decades and especially in the information age that words have become some of the most powerful tools in American politics and policy?

How about you think before smashing your fingers against the keys. Perhaps next time you could squish your forehead into the keyboard...that way they letters could get closer to your thoughts instead of being diluted by stupidity on the way down your arms.

106. Well the bottom line is Hillary sucks and Obama is the bomb
Everyone already knows what they got with Hillary and that is the same ol' corporate suck ass. Obama is about change and won't take the corporate money so if your sick of people fighting about it, then encourage Hillary to step aside and stop ruining the Dems chance at the White House. So many people in our own party can't stand her, there is no way she can win, but the Clintons are the Clintons and facts have never been something they care to much for anyways, because you know, it really depends on what the meaning of "is" is. And it "is" all about her, and the Clintons are known for destroying everything around them, just like they did the Democratic party and ushered in 8 years of Republican rule, and as long as she is around, its gonna happen again.

138. Obama is the bomb because he can bring about the change we need
I am sorry to here that you have changed over to the Republican party, but your wrong about Hillary. Most people where I live in Louisiana can't stand Hillary and they love Obama. The Obama rally was so big here that they had to bring in a Jumbo Tron for the parking lot because everyone couldn't fit in the building. Hillary can't possibly match that. I also liked Bill himself, not so much his corporate welfare policies and at the same time cutting welfare to the poor, but the Clinton's time are over and they need to politely step aside.

Sadly, Your Majesty, that teensy crown is not appropriate to your high office.

Looks like air freshener. Or perhaps Imperial margarine (. . . butter).

Or a bottle of Crown Royal (hmm, great idea).

So I hereby transmit a crown worthy of your worshipfulness. Please wear this one next time.

We are not worthy.

122. Observation: no one on my ignore list responded to this post
But all the people on my ignore list do act exactly as Nance has described. I now just give money to my candidate's campaign and avoid GD-P like the plague. If I spent any more time there I'd probably give up on the democratic party.

127. Molly the body snatcher
For the faux Molly. The difference between you and the real Molly is that she never once felt the slightest need to practice in front of a mirror. And she would have never felt a compunction to have to explain that what she was doing was satire, because she could actually write.

130. Hi Nance
Nance, I know that your message was obviously tongue in cheek, but there really is something that has been on my chest for some time and I hope that you won't mind if I use your post as the place to address it.

I just signed on to DU today (even though I've read the site constantly for the last five years) so that I can talk about the Hillary campaign and Geraldine Ferraro's comment to Obama about him only getting as far as he is because he's black.

I am a black woman and I know that there aren't very many black voices on DU and I hope that my comment isn't offensive to any but I just have to say that Hillary's behavior, and those of Ms. Ferraro, are just about every college-educated, professional black person's worse nightmare. I don't know a single black person, but PARTICULARLY black women, in Corporate America who has not had a similar situation like the one Barack is going through right now with Hillary.

I've talked to my sorority sisters, my friends, my co-workers and everyone I know who is black and they all say the same thing -- that when a certain type of white woman feels threatened, they will do whatever it takes to neutralize that threat. And it's unfortunate that so often, they tend to be so EASILY threatened.

In my own personal experience, I've had white female co-workers and supervisors who the minute they realize that I have every bit the talent, skills and experience to take the shine and spotlight off of them, suddenly I become persona non grata. Does that not sound EXACTLY like what Hillary is doing to Barack?? I've had white female supervisors send me e-mails raving over the quality of my work and work ethics, and then a week later try to get me fired for something as ridiculous as "insubordination." Their thinking is, "this b*tch is a threat and I have got to get rid of her" never mind that her only crime seems to be doing a great job. And for anyone who thinks this is just a personal rant, well it may be a bit, but it's so much bigger than just me. I don't know a single educated black person, especially female, regardless of talent and ability, who doesn't have her own story. And it seems that Essence and Ebony magazines (don't know if they still make Jet) have about a hundred articles on these ongoing office battles every year.

Hillary is a brilliant, capable woman who I would be proud to have as President. But I have to be honest that her behavior of "win at all costs" including relegating Barack's political experience to a speech, and Ferraro refusing to retract her idiotic statements that the only reason Barack is winning is because he's black is really stirring up some unwanted feelings in so many of my accomplished, successful black friends as well as me.

133. My Dearest Number23 ...
Firstly, welcome to the DU conversation. I am always honoured when anyone chooses one of my OPs to post for the first time - and humbled by the prospect (which perhaps only exists in my own mind) that I have said something that has prompted a desire to join the discussion.

Your reply has touched me deeply, and I know I am not alone in saying that. It is so well-written, and representative of the thoughts of so many of us here.

To achieve anything of import, to accomplish anything of note, is greatly demeaned by those who would dismiss the determination and effort required to reach such lofty goals as simply the result of being black, being a woman, being handicapped, being from a certain background. It is an insult to any individual who has worked tirelessly to reach the goalpost to be told that they have somehow "cheated" by being in a class of citizen that relies on the sympathy vote rather than the vote of confidence resulting from a job well done.

If your reply here is in any way indicative of your writing skills, and your ability to communicate thoughts and ideas in such easily-understood terms, I implore you to get your post count up so that you can post threads of your own creation - to be responded to, commented upon, and praised as is fitting.

Thank you so much for your response - I look forward to hearing much more from you in future. It is apparent that you have much to add to the discussion here - and what you have to contribute is something of value to all of us.

Thank you again and again.

--- Nance

136. Thank You, Nance
... for such a warm and lovely welcome.

It was very difficult for me to figure out how my post would be responded to, which is why I waited weeks before posting. I expected to either be derided as racist or mean-spirited, especially by the very type of women I'd depicted in my post. As my grandfather used to always say, " a hit dog will holler."

I think that's why I chose your post to respond to. Your posts always seem so informed, but yet lighthearted as though you know what you're talking about but you don't feel the need to lord it over everyone else. And you're right, to demean Barack's achievements because he's black is insulting, not to mention insane. When in the world did being black become a plus in this country unless you're an entertainer??

Last year the Washington Post did a series of articles on Being a Black Man. I don't know if you had a chance to see it but one of the things in the series that absolutely rocked me to the core was a poll they did questioning black men of various socio-economic levels. It was the black men who were the MOST affluent, with the MOST education who were the most terrified about losing their jobs. One of the primary reasons was because they didn't want to be viewed as intimidating or "threatening" to their white coworkers, even ones they exceeded in education and skills. Clarence Thomas talks about this too, and Lord knows I have very little understanding or respect for the man but in that regard, I completely get him. This is such a common refrain from educated blacks that no one thought twice when Thomas said it -- if anything, it was a surprise that Mr. Crossover mentioned it so publicly.

So when Hillary plays the victim card over and over all the while stabbing Barack in the back, she just reminds me of the other duplicitous women with flowing blonde locks I've known that were all too ready to lie, cheat and steal to take down anyone trying to steal their shine. She's so much better than that, but it's too bad she doesn't know it.

134. This is over 24 hours old! I wasn't able to recommend it. That hurts.
How did I miss it!?!

Made me laugh out loud many times over. Then I wanted to read it out loud to my partner but he had already read it. Too bad, because your stuff (especially this one) is extra fun to read out loud.

Elated is the last word I would think of if you left. Heck, I had withdrawals when you were recently ill (which, BTW, I hope you are fully recovered from). Of course, recently is an interesting concept in my ADD addled brain - I could be talking about a year ago.

Anyway, thanks for the laugh. I'd like to say I'm going to get off the fence and into the mud, but this is as far as I venture into GDP these days. I slip in to read one of your always fabulous rants and then I slip out again.
