ABC: Women Scorned: Why stand there?...Loyal Wives, Public Shame

Why Women Stand by Their Men
Wives Often Feel Pressured to Show Support, Experts Say

Silda Wall Spitzer is in good company.

There's Sen. Larry Craig's wife; Suzanne; former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey's wife, Dina; and Sen. Hillary Clinton, to name a few.

All are women who have stood by their men, all high-powered politicians accused of straying from home and hearth to pursue relationships with another woman or man.

Monday, Silda Wall Spitzer did the same, standing beside her husband, New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, as he apologized for letting down his family and the public after a federal investigation linked him to a ring of high-priced call girls.

It has quickly become the norm, say several political gurus, for politicians' wives to stand by their men in the midst of scandal, presenting a united front publicly as their personal lives crumble behind closed doors.

Spitzer has done what Obama could never do.
He has effectively brought the Clinton Sex Scandals to the forefront of the Media's attention.
They are running with it since this is the kind of story that gets ratings.
Plus it gives them the excuse to delve into their old Clinton treasure trove.

How will Hillary address this?

Will she condemn Spitzer and risk being seen as a hypocrite for not doing so with Bill?
Or will she stand by Spitzer and tie her wagon to another philanderer?

Does she really want to get back into all of this?
I think she has forgotten what it was like. She is getting a taste now.

8. There is no evidence that Mr. Spitzer wears a "prostitution ring"
I'm sure he doesn't need any extra help at all.

6. Hillary, one of the original "stand by her man" wifes.
I realize it's a solidarity move forced by legal council. It would hurt like #*, but it is a stand to help save the public image of the relationship.

I think it's sick unless it's sincere, that a wife must be there in front of the cameras to support the general character of her husband, and who knows but the wife how she really feels.

19. I think this is why we LIKE Michelle & Obama..
I have no doubt - not for ONE SECOND.. that Michelle would dump Barack, underwear & all onto the front lawn if she caught him cheating on her. She wouldn't bat an eye.. she wouldn't stand up next to him and smile like a woman who has just been walked on. She'd kick his ass out, change the locks, and tell him he'd better get that "president" job he's applying for, because he's going to need the salary and the house to live in.

And THAT is why Obama wouldn't cheat.. hell, the guy won't even smoke a cigarette around her. He's loyal to his family.. his family is loyal to him.

That's why a lot of us like the Obama's.

21. Are you expecting a scandal? Standing by someone you
are proud of is an honor and not awkward. I don't see that your comment is relevant to this thread.

12. Do you honestly think that she has forgotten what it was like?
I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but I don't know how she could've forgotten what it was like with the press hounding her/them, along with rw radio, etc., day in and day out for what seemed an eternity to me, and it wasn't my life being yacked about constantly.

Possibly tried to make the best of it, put it behind her and moved on, but I don't know how in the hell she could forget what that was like.

15. Oh, but they're storing up some real obligations on the parts of their spouses.
And since their spouses are public figures, even in the case of an ex-prez, they had better pay up satisfactorily.
