Now we have a former VP candidate spew this racial bigotry --- from our own party!
Of all the outlandish bullshit that has been tossed from anywhere in the political arena, I think
Geraldine Ferraro's comments (below) have to be the most incendiary I have seen to date.

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

link:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/11/ferraro.comments/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

I really don't see this as an Obama supporter vs Hillary supporter issue, I can't fathom any reasonably minding thinking compassionate human from ANY party --- green, puke, Dem, or independent that does NOT see this as overt racist bullshit!

WTF is it with prior Democratic VP candidates? Lieberman drinks the KoolAid and now Ferraro reveals she has a bigot mindset.

I'm a loyal Democrat, but I will not stand by when anybody - even a former Dem party nominee for Vice President - reveals herself to be holding on to archaic and blatantly racist beliefs!!!

5. her candidacy
is trying REALLY REALLY hard to ruin this party. They are still talking about some way to BLATANTLY steal this election with the super delegates. If they are successful at doing that the backlash could destroy this party for decades to come. She will NOT beat McCain and the African American community will NOT sit still for this and neither will I.

15. what is really sad
is that you refuse to see it. My call for unity is a plea to Hillary Clinton to stop trying to tear down her opponent-a democrat and that we should focus our energy on McCain and if the only way that can happen is a joint ticket with Obama on top (as he is now) then that's what should happen. I just saw a poll on MSNBC that said 72% of Clinton supporters won't accept Obama...it shows right here at DU every day

It was NOT a plea to Hillary Clinton as you now say it was. Some of us do read what you write you know. Get your story straight. You're here bashing Hillary as usual, so much for unity.

28. Here was my thread-what is so contradictory about it?
We Need Unity In Our Party
Look, we fight like cats and dogs here-people who have long liked and respected each other now find ourselves calling each other names and questioning each other's commitment to our own party. We are ALL democrats here, if we weren't we wouldn't be on a board called DEMOCRATIC Underground. This place was founded after the 2000 stolen election as a place we could all come to and tell our stories and air our disgust and grievances with the republicans and what they were doing to this country. I joined in early 2001 as Oustemnow and was one of the over 90,000 disenfranchised Florida voters. If what it's going to take is for a joint ticket of Obama/Clinton then I say we should do it. There really is a very slim chance it will be the other way around looking at the numbers. We should unite the party and Obama and Hillary should broker a deal for the joint ticket.

6. Once the Clinton's realized they could not depend on the Black vote they went for the bigot vote
-snip-
But far from backing off from her initial remark, Ferraro defended it and elaborated on it.

"Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up," Ferraro said. "Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

16. Gerri, we're attacking you because back in the day, you WERE the Affirmative Action candidate
Obama is not running for VP, he's running for president, which is a totally different scene. The American people are not known for being bleeding-hearts who feel sorry for the black guy and vote for him to give him a leg up.

That being said, your candidacy, even though it was an affirmative action move, was groundbreaking 20 years ago. You went where no woman has gone before or since.

You have been given a gift, and a big political leg up.

For you to use this position to kick the black guy is just REALLY, REALLY tacky.

But he got those votes on his own merits!

Obama has my support and millions of others because of who he is and what he says - I care not in the least what color the man is.

You entirely missed the point.

18. Yes, it's a double standard.
If Jews want to vote for the Jewish guy, women want to vote for the woman, and black people want to vote for the black guy, I can't fault them for that.

If white men want to vote for the white man, so that white men and their issues can be represented, then I do have a problem with that. If you want to go to the stormfront site, the klan site, or any other similar sites, you can read this exact argument. It's fucking Nazi bullshit and it's not cool.

10. Hillary brings out the worst in people
Clinton will destroy everything the democrats have worked so hard to gain these last few years. She will cross any line just to score cheap shots in a slight chance she can run in 2012. All of this is having an effect we democrats have not seen the likes of in many years.

Clinton the person who brought back the dixiecrats and moved them north.

I don't even understand her point. What did she mean to convey?

Was she trying to say that the only reason people are voting for him is because he's black? Then she says if he were a woman he wouldn't be in this position, either. WTF? How does she acount for Clinton in "this position." Is she off her meds?

I might add, if he was a woman, I've vote for him before Clinton any day.

all contrite, and Hillary is not "denouncing AND rejecting"--in fact, Geraldine is fanning the flames even more on FUX news. This may be, once again, a way to inject race into the campaign by a surrogate and get those PA blue-collar white guys reminded of how much they hate affirmative action. On edit--remember, it's all timing--the VP offer ONLY in Mississippi, and then it was "Who, me?" on the Monster's part. This comment by Ferraro is in advance of Obama's arrival in what I know to be a racist, white-ethnic-dominated state.

36. "a way to inject race into the campaign by a surrogate..."
Could be wienerdoggie, but I sure as hell hope not.

As cynical as I am about power and politicos --- if...big IF this was an intentional move by a Clinton surrogate who could not give a shit about her political legacy - but who intentionally planned or collaborated to inject race into the mix (again) - it would be the very, very worst kind of fear mongering race baiting politics.

I'd far prefer to think she is a lose cannon who made a very stupid/ignorant comment. But if there was collusion - that is far, far worse and I don't think I could forgive or forget that!

What part of Geraldine Ferraro's statement does not suggest she is race baiting or just plain stupid?

And please, quit the broad brush characterizations. Referring to Obama supporters as Obama/Freepers only fuels the fires. Why link us with fucking pukes at all? Of course, if it is just to piss people off....

34. Disgusting comment! Why don't they all leave & start their own party?
That is not what my Party members would say! I am very upset about this! I heard a Black lady say on Jeff Ferrias Show (on Nova M - same radio station as Mike Malloy) that Obama has to watch himself and everything he says because he is Black and Clinton is a white woman and a lot of people would go nuts if he ever said too much about her. I thought about it and I think she was right on! It made me realize just what a history of bigotry there still is in some area's of the country! Obama is a gentlemen and a great leader! I am proud and happy to support him!

Sad Day!:eyes:

40. I saw her speak back in 1988-- I was unimpressed.
Interestingly enough, at the time she said Jesse Jackson was not a "serious" candidate-- despite the fact that he had won several primaries and also finished second in my own state's caucuses.

Gerri represents the interests of the DLC and "establishment"-type Democrats. She can't abide anything remotely to the left of Mondale. Plus I think it bugs her that she got an even worse drubbing than Sargent Shriver did.
