21. I gave up on Ferraro when she traded jokes about their accountants with Bush I.

Millionaire wanted to join the Boys' Club and be billionaire--was my take. First woman VP candidate, ever--and that's what she had to say. Cozy cute giggles with the Godfather of the Bush mafia about how she has an accountant, too, and does Big George want a reference.

Not funny. I was so excited; made special arrangements to see that debate on TV. And that's all I remember from it. This woman doesn't represent me. She represents the upper middle class and the rich, contending with the super-rich--for power over the taxes they gouge out of my pittance wages, and for the emperor's crown. Yeah, I voted for her. What choice did we have? Like now. The choice between a corporate warmongering woman and a mixed race guy who's hard to read, spoke against the war early and publicly, then obediently voted to fund it some more. I'm not against rich people representing the poor. FDR was rich. And what he said was this: "Organized money hates me--and I welcome their hatred."

So it's not wealth bracket. It's attitude. It's policy. And it's gut level identification with all the people--not just the people you're comfortable with, who have accountants. The "hard to read" guy has a history of mixing with the unwashed. I like him for that. And his early life wasn't easy at all. I can't see him joking around with Bush mafia. Which probably means, no way he'll ever make it to the White House. These days they use Diebold, not bullets. So there's my unhappy thought for today. I am just...

...I am just mind-boggled by the triviality of this campaign, as it gets reflected here at DU (which is how I'm following it). And about anybody caring that Eliot Spitzer used prostitutes. Eight U.S. soldiers died today in Iraq. 1.2 million innocent people have been slaughtered there, to steal their oil. Millions more are refugees, wounded, sick. Billions of dollars have been stolen. We are facing a ten trillion dollar deficit over the decade. There are several signs that Great Depression II is upon us. Our country's going down. Our voting system, our Constitution, our economy, our manufacturing, our jobs, our educational system, and perhaps worst of all, our ideals of democracy and fairness and justice, here and in the big world, have been trashed. And we're supposed to care about a guy using prostitutes? Or what Bush I's giggle buddy, Geraldine Ferraro, had to say?

Boy, are we being played.
