1. We - do - perhaps - - Obama's upbringing is atheist
Obama says he was raise in a Christian household

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/12/22/531492.aspx
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2007/12/23/2007-12-23_im_no_muslim_says_barack_obama.html

but then
Obama says "I was not raised in a religious household... My mother's own experiences... only reinforced this inherited skepticism."
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1546298,00.html

but then
Obama's mother is recalled as calling herself an atheist

10. Yep. That's it in a nutshell.
Were an athiest nominee to rise the point of being seriously considered for the nod, much of the debate would, like it or not, be centered around "but where is his/her moral compass? How does he/she decide what is moral?" TV talking heads love to talk about morals.

What you said isn't true. The law is grounded in morality common to most ethical systems.

16. The law is compatible with any decent morality, really (it has the same problems either way).
Nothing about it is particularly Judeo-Christian (and if anything was, it would be unconstitutional).

If you disagree with this, then prove your assertion.

29. Oh, you're talking about what politicians say. Hillary would say much the same thing, I'm sure.
I think Obama has a point, though. As a practical matter, people have to use the moral tools they possess when talking about morality. Given how our laws are compatible with most actual moralities, that sentiment makes plenty of sense.

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:46 PM by Hissyspit
Law DOES NOT equal morality. Law does NOT equal right. Law is NOT, by definition, codification of morality. It can be those things, but is not automatically.

And much of what is found right in Judeo-Christian tradiation is found in other religions and doctrines, too.

Yours is a profoundly naive and uneducated statement. I hope you were being facetious.

36. We come from the "barbaric" tradition of limited government...
...deriving its authority from the consent of the governed.

The Judeo-Christian model of government is the exact opposite: government is ordained by God.

we have an athiest one. NOT in our lifetimes, sadly enough. We probably will have a Muslim president first.

As long as we can at least keep the insane creationist rants out of our science classrooms, I'll be happey.
