Does anyone have links to Obama's and Clinton's positions on Tibet?
There's a lot going on over there the last couple of days. It's near and dear to me. It's not like the world turns on the fate of the Tibetan culture (at least not in most peoples' minds), but I'd like to see what each of them have to say.

2. The lid will only stay on so long...
HHDL and the Tibetan Government in Exile won't let the issue die, and they've worked hard to keep attention on it. But, they know exactly what the Chinese government will do in the event of any uprising inside Tibet; the same thing they've done before. Tricky situation.

3. If Hillary shares Bill's position, then its terrible
Bill campaigned in 1992 on promise to wrk for human rights in China. He even mentioned in his acceptance speech at the convention. He said that the U.S. should "stop coddling dictators" and criticized the most-favored nation trading status of China

This was 1992, only 3 years after the bloody crackdowns on student democracy actists that were shown to the entire world on TV

But...
once in office, Bill instantly flipped. He continued MFN for China and pushed to "delink huiman rights" from trade. He made this announcement at the White House with Beijing's dictator standing beside him beaming.

Then they pushed to make the favored status permanant, changin the name to "normalized trading status" to make it an easier sell. I'll never forget reading of Madline Albright dancing the macarena for reporters as the results of the vote in Congress to legitimize the tyrants came in.

Then China was helped into the WTO. Their economy boomed. The tyrants are now entrenched and have no reason to reform. Bush has coninued the Reagan-Bush-Clinton policy.

I imagine Hillary will do the same, no matter what she says.

The China issue is one of the biggest reason I loathe the Clintons

4. War with China would be very bad.
Stopping all trade with China would only result in increased suffering of poor Chinese citizens.

What solutions do you think should be explored?

5. No easy answers
As you say, a generalized attack on China and trade with China isn't an answer. But then, China isn't in any position to end trade with us, either. I think an open and full support of the Tibetan cause is doable. Remember, HHDL isn't looking for independence anymore (at least not in the short run). The government is exile just wants a way for the Tibetan culture to survive the current deliberate attempt to dilute it to death by importing non-Tibetans. Thus the change from 'Free Tibet', to 'Save Tibet'.
