OK, I'm stepping up to the mic.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 07:27 PM by ronnykmarshall
Tap! Tap! Tap!

Is this thing on?

OK, I've said all say what I think of "The Speech". It was beautiful. Excellent. I'll go as far to say one of the best political speeches in years.

BUT! I have to talk shit to BOTH sides of so called "supporters" here.

First to my fellow Hillary supporter.

1. He (Obama) is NOT a 'fraud'.

2. He did not "play us like a fiddle".

3. He's not a big poo-poo head.

NOW, on to the other team.

1. Just because I don't fall to the ground screaming "he's the one", "he's gods gift" doesn't mean I don't support him. I fact, I'm more impressed with him then I've EVER felt since this shit of a primary season started.

2. I RESENT the comment like "you're not listening", "you have no heart" or "you're a big shit fuck asshole" if you don't join the Obama camp.

3. I'm no less of a Democrat or an American because even after this speech that I still have the god-damn NERVE to still support Hillary Clinton.

I'm VERY proud of Obama. He has proved he's gonna fight McCain and the GOP slime machine in the GE if he's the nominee.

Done. Said it. Not taking a word back.

Don't like it????

EAT ME!

And I mean that with love.

I can get behind honesty and passion.

I have to say that this speech seems to have done more to bridge the gap between Hillary Supporters and Obama Supporters than anything through this entire campaign. That counts for something! Thanks for the post.

BTW, if Hillary ended up our nominee, you would see me fall in complete and total love over night.

This reasonable logic is what gives me hope and although this rationality is becoming harder to find lately, it's like a breath of fresh air.
Yes, this is my first post, so feel free to think I have no idea of what goes on around here... but after lurking for several months, it's this type of openness that prompted me to create the account and contribute as well.
Thank you for your willingness to see good on both sides of the coin and for sharing that for those that lose sight of it.
I'm proud that my first post is to agree with you.

27. "Eat Me?" ---- Only with ketchup and mustard
Personally I have no problem if you support Hillary. What matters is that Obama set up a possibility of a more positive contest, and let's hope he, she and we follow suit.

I was an Obama supporter before this speech. But I must admit it was more of a "he's not Hillary" kind of support. But his speech made me appreciate him much more -- his intellect, his guts and, perhaps most important of all, his willingness to speak to the voters like adults.

It gives me hope that in the end, we all will come together and support our Democratic nominee...no matter who it will be.

The most obnoxious and ignorant supporters on either team here on DU might be very vocal but are a minority here. I see more and more DUers from both teams jumping in if their own supporters are way out of line.

There are people on both sides who thrive on conflict. No one who's really interested in fair dialogue could slam you for sticking with your candidate, just as no one with eyes, ears, a brain and a reflection could call Obama a fraud after yesterday's speech.

My suggestion is that BOTH types need to go on ignore and stay there. They'll be gone soon enough once the nomination is sorted out.

Thanks, Ronny.

83. You're not listening!
Is there any plausible way for Hillary to win?

I'm curious about what you think Hillary's path to victory really is.

How is she going to win this thing? Can she lose the delegate race, lose the popular vote, and somehow come away with a win from the convention?

And if she does, this scenario helps the party how? She won't ever win a general if she does that, will she? Her negatives will be even higher than they were when this thing started. A year ago half the people in the country wouldn't vote for her. If she snakes the nomination away from a movement that won more votes and more delegates then she'd be almost guaranteed to lose every state in the general election. Half of the people that can still stomach her now will never vote for her if she continues.

How does she get to the White House?

Do you have any plausible scenario?

114. Instead of name calling, try reason and logic.
There are plenty of posters on this site that oppose Hillary Clinton's candidacy with reason and facts rather than name-calling. Also, a majority of Democratic voters have supported Obama. If you are a committed citizen with the values of the Democratic Party, use reason and facts to generate a discussion. Have some respect for the process of discussion if you really care to convert others to your view.

It's the question that nobody wants to face.

Nobody will ever even try to answer it. They just don't want to be asked that question.

I think I've asked almost all of the most prolific posters here, and have only gotten two responses (one person actually admitted that her chances were slim to none, and the other thought that Obama could fall completely apart).

If anybody has a plausible scenario, I'd sure like to hear it.

98. From what I've seen
it's been the Obama camp who have been slinging a remarkable amount of vindictive. By far.
It is what has turned me off of him completely.

Don't believe me? A couple days ago there was a poll on DU asking if anyone has noticed people of either faction who have stopped posting here.
Tellingly, a total of 73% have said they know of Clinton supporters who have either left DU completely (70%) or who have left GDP (the remaining 3%).

Mind you, if Senator Obama wins the primary, of course I'll vote for him -- One would have to be insane (or extremely stubborn & selfish) to even THINK of voting any other candidate in any other party after the lessons we've learned --or hopefully learned-- these past interminable years.

Barack Obama has turned into the centerpiece of a cult of personality. Yes indeedy, of the same type as the one devoted to Dubya ***shudder***
...but then that's what cult's of personality do...
Instead of basing one's decision upon facts and issues, people are getting all starry eyed and emotional
--not that there's anything wrong with that, but those responses really belong only towards one you love romantically;
otherwise it is completely out of place and certainly not a valid reason to vote for a President!
It is exactly on the same level as 'I'd like to have a beer with him'.
That is rather frightening. It appears we have not learned our recent past history, no matter how much that type of mindset has been ridiculed and railed against here.

One person responded to me how his/her eyes 'filled with tears just thinking that Senator Obama could become President'.
Indeed that is something to be proud of, truly; but shouldn't that reaction also be just as appropriate upon thinking of a woman as president?

Yet that is hardly, if ever the case. Why is that?

Why do women not get the same emotional response; especially when women make up the majority in every group on earth, of any race, of any religion, of any nationality (perhaps not Chinese, due to the relatively recent culture of aborting female fetuses because of the overwhelming desire to have their one allowed child be male) -- of any group at all?

Long before this primary race even began I was apprehensive that the sociological response in this country would be the same as our past history.
After all, and sad to say, men of any color were legally able to vote in this country over 100 years before suffrage finally (by the vote count of 1!) succeeded.

Both non-white men and women (of ANY color!) deserve to finally be elected as President. It should have happened LONG ago.
Yet true to form women are disparaged to a much greater extent in this country, in this society.
Even Repigs know enough to be Politically Correct when talking about non-white politicians but when it comes to those who are women... well, we've all seen the invective used against women, treated for the most part as passing remarks. Sure, there's been a little said, but not near enough pressure to nip it off at the bud -- whatever has been said against such usage has not been heeded because it still keeps happening again and again.

I, for one, and considering what's been gotten away with here, would love to see comments about oh let's say McCain's fat ankles or legs but it doesn't matter for him, he's a guy!
Yet it somehow DOES matter against a woman.
Or Botox? (God knows I'm NOT defending Ms. Pelosi!)
Many, many men, even in Congress, have had face lifts, body work, hair dye &/or restoration and even Botox but nary a word is said about them! Some even wear make-up!
But WOMEN...
Hell, fair game! Go get those vain women, for only women are vain! Right?
Wrong.

Don't both non-white men and women (of ANY color!) deserve the same respect, and if not the 'respect' per se, at least the same commentary?
Yet such has not been shown.
Even here.

Look -- Hillary ain't great, I'll be the first one to say it, but both she and Barack are the only two options open to us now.
Shouldn't she --no, doesn't she deserve-- the same treatment as any other man??
And if we ALL don't constantly, consistently strongly protest every time a sexist slur is used against Sen. Clinton, well then, based upon our party's principles, do we deserve the appellation of 'Democrat'?
As for those who indulge in sexist invective here... :puke:

Does not this country deserve, nay NEED, a President elected not on how they elicit ones emotions but on their actual platform?

Hey, if you want to elect Barack Obama on his platform, fine -- but when considering him for our future president it appears that is the LAST thing most people care or even think about! If you're For Mr. Obama, tell us what in his platform stirs you to support him, NOT what warm & Fuzzy emotions he generates within you! Please!

BTW, saying "EAT ME!", even with supposed (?)"love" is really typical of the type of rhetoric and arrogance around here. I hope you feel better for typing that, for that is the only benefit you'll get out of it; for the ones it will please have already decided upon Barry O. but it will hardly impress any who are on the fence or those who you are trying to convince -- in fact quite the opposite.

I'm all about "Eat Me".

As far was me "feeling better for typing that" ...... I wasn't trying to impress or convince any fence sitters. I don't really care. I try and not take this place very serious. That's the kind o' gal I am.

125. A president needs to have more than just a platform
A president has to have leadership skills. Sen. Clinton has a good platform, but I honestly don't think she makes as good a leader as Sen. Obama. His ability to communicate is impressive - when the candidate's positions are as close as the two of theirs are, that makes a difference.

She has not demonstrated the ability to listen effectively, or admit her mistakes. Obama has.
She has not been as open with the press. Obama has.
She has been to eager to listen to the polls instead of doing what is right.

I have more of a problem with Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson than I do with Senator Clinton per se. She has done what it takes to win Texas, Ohio, and probably Pennsylvania, but she has done it by handing ammunition to the Republicans in the fall.

By the way, I don't see the point of posting an inflammatory message accusing Obama supporters of being vindictive, cultists, etc., then accusing people who don't agree with you of being sexist.

There has been a lot of mud slung on both sides by overzealous supporters. There have been Obama supporters and Clinton supporters who have reacted to any criticism of there candidates by ad hominem attacks on the poster, accusations of racism or sexism, or just plain vitriol.

You have every right to support Sen. Clinton, just as I have every right to support Sen. Obama. That does not make you a racist or me a sexist.

123. Thanks for your post
To be honest, before the speech I was more supporting Obama because he was NOT Hillary Clinton. But my politics are probably to the left of most people who post on this board.

I disagree with a lot of Sen. Clinton's policies, and with the entire Clinton / DLC tactic of 'triangulation.' I also felt that she destroyed our chances to have health care reform in the early Clinton administration by being too secretive and by not being willing to allow changes in her proposal. I am especially upset with her, and a lot of other candidates, who voted for the IWR. I feel they were watching the polls instead of voting for what was right. But with that being said, I would vote for her in the general election, just as I voted for Kerry, Mondale, Dukakis, and a lot of other Democrats I did not like.

But getting back on topic - I agree with you it doesn't make you an asshole or racist if you aren't impressed with the speech as much as I was. You don't have to believe he is 'god's gift,' or whatever. I have never said that myself. I believe he is a great orator and that he would make a good, if not great president. The speech he made on race was one of the best speeches I have heard in a long time. Perhaps not on the level of 'I have a dream,' or The Gettysburg address, but still a hell of a lot better than anything I have heard from an American politician since RFK was shot. If other people don't feel that way, that's OK, as long as they support him if he wins the nomination.

I can say withoug Hillary, William Jefferson Clinton would never have been President, why the heck you are giving democrats more hell than you do republicans. And in all fairness Bill An Hillary were bashed more than any President before him..And now it makes me sick to my stomach to see you Obama people bashing, and in fact it makes me think less of Obama, my husband who hasn't seen all this stuff on DU, is solidly behind Obama,I know how badly you want a first black man as President, but be carefull you may be hurting him by bashing, you know the old story homey get flies better than vinegar, I would be pleased to have the three, Obama , Edwards and Hillary, you could even thorw in Biden, Richardson, and Dennis, lets don't forget Dodd and some others
