is Evan Bayh trying out for vp ?
i have been seeing him on tv a lot lately and he is better than usual. he hasn't been one of those mentioned so far as having a meeting with kerry or any of his people on the vp issue but maybe he is hoping some will take notice. there were a few bayh supporters who claimed kerry could win indiana with bayh on the ticket but i found that hard to believe and none provided actual sources but i would be interested in some more polls.

1. Don't think he's even on the short list and glad he isn't
Hell I am a Democrat through and through and I respect Lugar more than him.

2. Screw Bayh
Edited on Thu May-13-04 02:32 AM by Quetzal
I saw him on Charlie Rose last night.

Voted for the Late-Term abortion ban, Libermanesque on the Iraq War, and a fundamentalist free-trader, voted for the Senate bill to block civil lawsuits against Gun Companies. No way would I want him to occupy the White House in case something happens to Kerry.

3. I like Bayh...
...I realise many liberal dems don’t but there ya go, I’m a moderate populist…

I disagree with him on trade mostly but apart from that I agree with him a great deal. He’s one of the most decent, cordial and principled people in the senate imho and while he isn’t electrifying (his major problem as far as being VP goes) he has a articulate, conversational style that many voters might react well to…

He has been interviewed by Johnson at least once as far as the press has reported. He was interviewed twice by Warren Christopher back in 2000 and was a major possibility for Gore in 2000…

The Problem is, he probably won’t give Kerry Indiana, he wont necessarily help in the Ohio and he could be too dull…

Personally I think his dullness is the real problem, his views would help Kerry tremendously and he looks the part (much as Edwards does) but he just doesn’t have the charisma and ability to articulate his message in an enlivened and inspiring way like Edwards does…

4. How can Bayh criticize Chimpy?
He agrees with everything he proposes. Tax Cuts, War, Partial Birth Abortion, etc. He would upset the Dem base being the pick. His Womens Rights record is extremely upsetting

5. He disagreed over Health and Education…

I agree with his stance on abortion; however I recognise that some democrats do not, but banning partial birth abortions imho was the right thing to do. Calling the issue “women’s rights” is an interesting thing to do? But Bayh has never been deceitful about his views, he does not agree with the idea of abortion except in exceptions circumstances (health of the mother, rape and incest) but he has said that a woman should have the right to decide within the first trimester even though he would urge someone not to have an abortion and I agree generally with that…

Hum…doesn’t seem like the record of a man who gets a UAC rating of 22 while Indiana’s Republican Senator Richard Lugar gets 79! And John Breaux gets 46 (D-LA), Mary Landrieu (D-LA) 15, Olympia Snowe 56 (R-ME), Arlen Spectre 43 (R-PA), Russ Feingold 12 (D-WI), Blanche Lincoln 22 (D-AR) and its goes on

So how ridicules is it to say that Bayh votes with the GOP 80% of the time!

You may dislike a politician but your accusations should have figures and evidence to back them up… sorry to quibble but it seems pretty obvious to me!

6. No. He's running for reelection.
He'll have his shot at the presidency in 2008 (if Kerry loses) or 2012.

7. Proably...
Edited on Thu May-13-04 10:13 AM by Finch
...only Bayh can hold IN, and he's dame near unbeatable there anyway... it could be a big mistake to pick him simply because the GOP might well take the seat, that said there are a number of moderate Dems with a strong following in the state who could win...

Its a shame because he's done a great deal of good, sure he's a moderate... but look at how well he did in Indiana when he was Governor and I've been really impressed by how principled his stands and cordial his tone has always been within the senate.

8. However....
Though Bayh may be a midwestern version of Joe Liberman, he is really hot.

This can't be discounted when thinking about the ever-important soccer mom vote.

And the also-important closeted NASCAR dad vote.
