Nader as VP
Consider it...he has the reform party behind him. He'll probably get 2 percent (at least) of the national vote anyway, which may be enough to push Kerry over the top in places like Florida.

I'm not advocating for it at all...just wondering your thoughts on what it would cause. I'm inclined to say it could be a powerful ticket, and Nader would bring out a lot of non-voters, independents, etc.

His vote totals in 2000 alone, added to Gore's, would have given Gore an astounding victory. I don't know if Nader is so hated here that I'm the first to bring this up...sorry if the thought is too unbearable to any of you.

Thoughts, please.

1. Interesting....
Ultimately a bad idea, but trying to assuage Nader with a post might not be bad...

2. I would have no problem with voting for this
Nader's hypocrisy on a mainstream ticket that doesn't claim to be the conscience ticket would not be as remarkable. :D

5. Nader would make Repugnants flock to the polls
Bush would win in a landslide, maybe even in Massachussets.

15. i highly doubt it
the GOP paints everyone to the left of the shrub with the same brush and sees kerry as being a step away from chairman mao, anyway. they're already fired up and are too stupid to see any distinctions in degrees of libeal-ness between nader and anyone else kerry could pick

27. wrong, wrong, wrong
don't tell me we wouldn't attract some disgruntled Republicans votes if John Edwards is chosen VP, as opposed to Nader. I like Nader's views, but he's too liberal to be in any winnable ticket.

10. i don't know
I think the left has a much larger untapped voter base than the right.
It's possible that Nader on the ticket could bring out Republicans, but remember, he's backed by the Reform Party, he'll get all the greens who might stay at home, and he might even draw dissenchanted Republicans (they are out there) who just aren't going to vote.
Again, it's interesting, that's all.

11. It's not unbearable, just nonsensical
"His vote totals in 2000 alone, added to Gore's, would have given Gore an astounding victory."

Factor out the Lieberman factor in Florida (it was huge) and replace him with Nader's 95,000 votes, and whaddya got: a blowout for Bush.

That's right: Even Lieberman would be a better choice than Nader.

12. NO!!!!!!
Putting Nader on the ticket would chase away far more moderate votes than it would attract far left votes - thus giving another (s)election to the repugs. Besides, Nader was one of the reasons for Gore's loss in '00, and is threatening to do the same in '04 - and the DLC is going to reward him for this "loyalty" by putting him on the ticket? NO EFFIN WAY!!!

13. Will hobble Kerry
Nader would spendf the entire time complaing about the adminsitration that he was serving in - and he would never accept it.

Nader is who he is and a large part of the is to take on the powers that be. That would include Kerry.

In our divided and sick country his skills would serve to polarize even more. We are in too much trouble right now.

14. Zero chance of it.
Kerry has hardly been known to take foolish risks. Nader has less appeal than Rev. Sharpton. He would add nothing of value to the ticket, and would cost Kerry a great amount of support.

16. Kerry can't pick McCain -- but he can pick NADER???
Edited on Wed May-19-04 05:09 PM by dolstein
Sorry, no f*cking way. Nader worked as hard as anyone in 2000 to keep Al Gore out of the White House.

Unlike Nader, McCain actually tried to keep Bush out of the White House -- by depriving him of the Republican nomination. McCain may not be perfect, but he's a better friend to the Democratic Party than Nader is.

17. Perhaps
Nader won't get the turnout he did in 2000. But he's certainly going to try to...hell, he's going to try to go all the way, right?
I hope people here aren't so intolerant of Nader that they have just stopped thinking about him. (In other words, go ahead and be intolerant, we all have reason to be, but don't let it blind us from facing the facts)

I mean, he's going to play a role in 2004, that's a fact. And the nature of our electoral system could magnify his candidacy, yet again, into defeat for our side. He's polling at 3-6% nation-wide.

I don't know how realistic it is, but numerically, if you add Nader's numbers to Kerry's, you've got Bush soundly defeated. In the real world (ie, people, not numbers) who knows...

18. No way
Besides being an intractable, egotistic, self-righteous prick, Nader is nuts. I'd rather see Carottop as VP candidate than Nader.

Well, maybe not really.

23. Not really, it's the DEMOCRATIC ticket...
Hence the two people on it should be DEMOCRATS. Considering how many democratic politicians there are, that shouldn't be that difficult.

I'd probably write-in Al Gore if that happend. This is a good way to tick off about 3/4 of the Democratic Party. His shenanigans should NOT be rewarded.

26. Nader's an idiot and he's not that liberal
The guy lied about Gore and got us Bush. He had stock in Occidental and lied about Gore having it. Gore didn't. Nader likes HMO's. Instead of going for the Dem nomination, he went for election-fixing in favor of Bush.
