Are any of you perfect?
I'm just curious... cause there seems to be an awful lot of expecting other people to be perfect going on right now. If it's not someone blaming their actions on someone else cause they're not acting as perfectly reasonable as the person expects... it's someone that feels they're righteous enough to slam the person for being unreasonable... which I don't know about all of you... but I'm surely not going to sit here and lie and say that I'm never unreasonable... and I'm certainly not going to fucking insult someone because they don't meet my high standards. (Okay, well... not often... like I said, I'm not perfect!)

I'm as sick of trolling disruptors as anyone else is... but I don't assume that I know for certain which people who seem to be disrupting are actually trolls... and which might be honest people who are just having a bad day. I think enough people have said it's in all of our interest to stop acting unreasonably... and I surely don't expect that everyone will act reasonably forever and ever amen... but there seems to be a distinct lack of effort today for some reason. Maybe I'm just noticing it more, I don't know.

And maybe I'm just more fucked up than the average person... that's ENTIRELY likely... but honestly, I have had my moments when I've let my emotions get the better of me and posted something irrational in a huff. I feel genuinely sorry for it later, and I move on. I sure don't expect to be jumped on by everyone for fucking up. But that's what we're doing here... FAR too often.

*sigh*

I wish I could give this forum a great big chill pill. I know we can do better than this. Let's just try to cut each other a little more slack than usual over the coming weeks, considering... how about that?

1. Perhaps if we
all take responsibility for our own actions, in the sense of making the DU:GD-P forum one where progressive & liberal discussion takes place, we would all have a good time here. More: we would all have a great time when the democratic party reaps huge victories in the November elections.

Nominated.

5. Yes... that's a great idea.
Instead of carrying around past personal hurts... try to make it about the campaigns... and try to use fewer loaded words... and just that sort of thing in general.

Sorry for whining... it's just... damn.

20. Right.
We are each responsible for our own behavior -- be it on this forum or in the voting booth in November. We shouldn't resort to the "because of you, I'm going to _____." That is the sibling of the "look what you made me do!" behavior.

Taking responsibility for ourselves means that we are willing to give others a break. It also means that we be patient with ourselves, because we are all human.

There is a great George Harrison song, that he wrote at the time that his first band was breaking up. It's called "Run of the Mill":

Everyone has a choice
When to or not to raise their voices
It's you that decides
Which way will you turn
While feeling that our love's not your concern
It's you that decides

No one around you
Will carry the blame for you
No one around you
Will love you today and throw it all away
Tomorrow when you rise
Another day for you to realize me
Or send me down again

As the days stand up on end
You've got me wondering how I lost your friendship
But I see it in your eyes

Though I'm beside you
I can't carry the lame for you
I may decide to
Get out with your blessing
Where I'll carry on guessing

How high will you leap
Will you make enough for you to reap it?
Only you'll arrive
At your own made end
With no one but yourself to be offended
It's you that decides

24. Naw…
You weren’t perfect but I think you were always nice. :)

What I meant was that when someone’s passionate about the same candidate it changes one’s perspective of them. So those with differing candidates now shouldn’t take it personally because they might like the other person four years from now, if that makes any sense.

11. Nah, you couldn't, because a big part of being less than perfect is
being lazy. So I won't take you up on your challenge because, well, I don't feel like doing it.

(Good post on your part, though. At least you TRIED to inject some sanity into this forum. Won't work, but I do give you credit for trying.)

29. Here's my controversial opinion:
I think we shouldn't be allowed to vote until we learn how to disagree respectfully. Oh - and learning how to critically think isn't that bad, either.

That's how I'm feeling at the moment. Or perhaps I'm just having a bad day. ;)

30. Have you been reading my mind?
I was thinking the same thing a little earlier today. There are people on here who get all up in arms over the smallest thing, real or perceived, and it makes me wonder if they are that demanding of themselves.

Jeebus freak, people! Nobody is perfect, nobody always tells the truth, and there probably isn't a person on the face of the earth who hasn't done something that wasn't 100% straightforward and honest.

I know this: there are a few people on this board that I most likely would not want to interact with in the physical world, because I know I could never live up to their demands.

And I second the idea for a chill pill. If I find such a thing, I'll pass them out. :)

31. Accountability
The following commentary is preaching, please go to the next post without reading this if that makes you uncomfortable.

<preaching>

Wanting to be 'perfect' is often about wanting to be 'right', since if I'm 'wrong' then I can feel that I'm 'guilty'. My friends used to chide me about being wrong sometimes, but never being in doubt. I claim that as a badge of honor! And, good lord, does it make me clearly not even close to 'perfect'.

There are certainly some things out there that are 'bad', and it's important not to compromise in those respects. 'Wrong' DOES NOT EQUAL 'bad'. Guilt can be a useful emotion if I use it to drive changes in my behavior, but being wrong doesn't make me guilty of anything. When I feel guilty it's just a short hop over to 'shame' and nobody does well in that neighborhood. Instead of 'guilt' I go with 'accountability' - yep, I did 'it', and it would have been better, maybe even intensely, hugely better, if I had don't something else. After I notice that, I can choose not to feel guilty, but instead simply do something different to try to get back on track.

Not a particularly 'heroic' perspective, but then being a hero is over-rated.

Remember - No matter who you are, it's only a matter of time before your next nerdly act.

</preaching>

32. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, yes ... I am perfect.
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 06:43 PM by TahitiNut
O8)

He essentially defined perfection as meeting the purpose for which created. So, it begs the question of one's purpose for even being on Earth. Even when one adopts the perspective of individual participation in the development of the meaning of one's own life, one must accept the perfection of those lives. So ... I'm perfect.

Sometimes the meaning of one's life is best found in offering a bad example to others. :silly:
(There are many here who seem to demonstrate that daily.)

42. Not perfect, but acceptable
I'm not asking anyone to be perfect, but I would ask that the bar for "acceptable" be set a little higher.

For example, Mark Penn bothers the crap out of me. He is one of the sleaziest, slimiest, unethical people imaginable. He is a carbon copy of Karl Rove. But, if Hillary gets elected, you know that he will have incredible White House access. She will take his phone calls any time of the day or night -- and he will get what he wants for his client du jour.

He represents Blackwater, for crying out loud.

The White House could get one million letters and emails from us rank and file, but one call from Mark Penn can erase them all. If you doubt that, you don't know how the system works.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't acceptable in my book.
