Fla. Voting Machines Have Recount Flaw

FROM: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040612/ap_on_el_pr/florida_voting_machines&cid=694&ncid=2043
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Touchscreen voting machines in 11 counties have a software flaw that could make manual recounts impossible in November's presidential election, state officials said.

A spokeswoman for the secretary of state called the problems "minor technical hiccups" that can be resolved, but critics allege voting officials wrongly certified a voting system they knew had a bug.

The electronic voting machines are a response to Florida's 2000 presidential election fiasco, where thousands of punchcard ballots were improperly marked. But the new machines have brought concerns that errors could go unchecked without paper records of the electronic voting.

The machines, made by Election Systems & Software of Omaha, Neb., fail to provide a consistent electronic "event log" of voting activity when asked to reproduce what happened during the election, state officials said.

1. I wonder if Chuck Hagel still owns a big chunk of that company? I'm
ashamed that I don't know that since I'm a Nebraska resident. I just got so sick of the mess during his denials and then when he had to admit that he owned a large chunk of the business, that I quit paying attention.

I guess that it's time to pay attention again.

2. As a fellow Nebraskan, I can tell you Hagel...
still has an interest in the touchscreen voting scheme.

However, to his credit, he has recused himself from any input into the situation.

I never thought I would like Hagel, but I've got to tell you, the way he's beating bush over the head w/McCain at his side, I am duly impressed, the Band of Brothers is a tight band...:)

3. Yeah, I'm afraid that I've made poor Chuck's office spend a small
fortune on postage. I got my latest reply from him today in the mail. Not that I think that it was a personal reply, although maybe some have been. I know that his office left an message on my answering machine one day in regard to the school voucher issue. I was at work though.

Yeah, he could be worse. Ben Nelson is just a repub calling himself a democrat. Hagel's got a better voting record than he does. But I can't tolerate Nelson anyway.
