Poll question: Where do you live?
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 06:44 PM by Scoopie
Somewhere way down the page in a thread I don't care to revist (LOL!), someone commented that all Southerners weren't worthy since there was a /sarcasm/ eight-point difference in a right-wing poll /end sarcasm/ taken in Tennessee this week.
I don't happen to agree with the poll since I live in the most conservative area of the state and am seeing more and more and more anti-Bush and/or John Kerry stickers than I am Bush stickers. I don't think that means that East Tennessee will, ahem, carry Kerry, but the state's still going to be close (+ or - 3 percent is my guess). I also wish Kerry get his lanky rearend down to this state - he's never even visited - and that might turn the tide.
In any case, I would like to know which area most DUers are from. I'm guess the Northeast, but, to be honest, I see quite a few Southerners around here.
And, to those Southerners - God bless you for staying in God's country and promoting the idea that progressive policies are better for our people!! And to you folks from other parts of the country, we would appreciates a little help and support, here. You're welcome to come down here and campaign for more progressive policies ANYTIME.

4. I happen to live in the Mid-South.
Missouri/Arkansas border. I don't see the deep south mentioned, nor the mid-South, just the midwest.

I don't consider myself mid-west.

14. Hee hee
I knew I'd left something out.
Lemme see if the poll will let me change it.
I know what you mean - Arkansas is a little more south than mid-west and Missouri is a little more mid-west than south, but they're both a blend.

26. You are right on the Mason-Dixon line!
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 10:47 PM by janx
But I was raised in the St. Louis area, and I don't consider myself a southerner any more than someone in Kansas City would, although some aspects of the deep South came up the Mississippi River to St. Louis--some, like slavery, not good; others, like great music, marvelous.

Missouri is an interesting and marvelous state to grow up in. It's almost in the very middle of the geographical lower 48--you have to move to the 100th meridian in Kansas to get to the actual center. But Missouri goes from something like upper midwest, culturally, to southern, in its bootheel and even north of that. The dialect varies a great deal throughout the state.

I don't miss the heat and humidity, but I do miss some of the birds and flowers I grew up with. Missouri used to have a lot of dense woods and beautiful little rivers, especially in the area where you come from.

Cheers! :toast:

11. Tucson, Arizona
Originally from Hawaii. One question, why is the South "God's Country"?

My own personal belief is that no where on earth can claim to be God's special place, and that all the earth is "God's Country."

Just an opinion.

46. That's f*cked up, man
Because I hear the upper midwest, with our abundance of lakes, forests and, um, Norwegian-Americans called "God's Country" all the time. Especially MN and WS.

MS or AL "God's Country"? That's just plain f*cked up.

47. This land is your land
This land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

12. Mountain City, TN!
Extreme NE corner of the state on the NC line. This area is gorgeous. I have the place I always dreamed of; a log cabin in the woods on 5 acres in the middle of nowhere. But, it is populated by dyed in the wool Republicans. I don't do a lot of socializing and don't go to church, which is the main social function here, but there are sleeper cells of Democrats here. They are very low profile and you can tell who they are by what they don't say. Scoopie's right; we could use some help down here because we're outnumbered. Edwards for VP!!

44. You're right
See... as a Tennessean I reserve the right to call Texas whatever I want to since Texas would not have been a state without the good men (and some women) of Tennessee (remember the Alamo). I think they're southwestern. But I keep hearing from others they're Southern.
I still think they're just different. And we'll leave it at that. ;)

45. Let's hear it FOR the South
Edited on Fri Jun-18-04 10:56 PM by Scoopie
As I predicted... so far the Northwest leads.
However, I'm very HAPPY to report that the South - Southeast and Southwest - are VERY WELL represented on this blog.

In the Democratic Underground (to be known henceforth as "DU"), in the state of the Internet, I hereby file and request the following:

As this is a DU board and is subject to the will of the bloggers, set forth in Membership, I do:
THEREFORE decree, that, on June 18, 2004, there shall be no further namecalling, pigeonholing, and/or, otherwise, downputting, of people who hail from the South.

THEREFORE, I also hereby decree that any such person or persons who automatically and without thinking, kneejerks their way onto a thread to do what is first put forth in Paragraph 1, should thereby be punished by reading this legal mumbo jumbo and have to do a report on why it is we're fighting in the first place.

Originally from Los Angeles. Moved here in 1981, never looked back. Have lived in Nevada, NJ, Ohio and Florida - all as a kid.

I now wouldn't live anywhere else, except Canada or Europe, if I could afford it. But, barring the death of an unknown rich relative, I'll happily live here in Washington until it's time to ring down the curtain and have a look at the great mystery.
