Do Lessons of the Past Inform Our Perilous Future? (CMB)
A post-campaign message from Carol Moseley Braun

Dear Friends:

Recent ceremonies and events -- beginning with honoring the veterans of World II and remembering D-Day -- bring to the fore my deep respect for the Maori people. When I was ambassador to New Zealand, I learned so much from them. They believe that if we keep our eyes on the lessons of the past as a path of instruction for our decisions in present time -- the actions we take will create a better future, an improved legacy, a tomorrow more in keeping with our hopes and higher values than the past we inherited. (Please see the text of commencement remarks at www.carolforpresident.com.)

But have we kept our eyes on lessons of the past? As we watch our president try to make lemonade out of lemons that have cost so many American and Iraqi lives, we must surmise that some people have learned nothing or closed their eyes in order to serve special interests. We are truly at a global crossroads that will impact our country and lives for the foreseeable future.

We must help our families, friends, and neighbors understand what is at stake in the upcoming General Election. We must elect a new president and leaders at all levels of government who will restore the America that we love and believe in. It is also be an opportunity to elect more women, especially to Congress where we have so few. WE CAN DO ALL THOSE THINGS by working together at the grassroots -- keeping our collective eyes on both the past and the prize!

Sincerely,
Carol Moseley Braun
