Wow! I'm not sure I'm welcome then. I'm pretty moderate. It's true that I'm pro-abortion. (Yup, not just pro-choice.) And I'm in favor of civil unions and Affirmative Action. But in many cases, I'm able to see the other side, and to respect it, even if I disagree. For example, I respect pro-life people who provide active support to pregnant women and their children, helping them find SUCCESSFUL alternatives. I recognize that "marriage" is a loaded word with both legal and religious connotations, and therefore, the issue of gay marriage is trickier than it should be. I also realize that Affirmative Action creates almost as many problems as it attempts to solve.
I can even see potential benefits in vouchers... if they would somehow set them up in ways that EXCLUSIVELY benefit the financially disadvantaged, and additionally, require that they be monitored by USAGE so that all races were equally using them in proportion to their populations. (I've heard that private schools aren't necessarily opening their doors equally to all kids with vouchers.)
AND, I see some benefits to protecting big business, especially whenever it protects AMERICAN jobs.
To be honest, it seems to me that DU finds room for lots of Independents, Libertarians and Green Party members in addition to Democrats. So maybe the name is wrong.
Joe Lieberman, bless his yarmulke, is as right-wing as right gets, but he's still a Democrat. John Edwards told the conventioners that Al-Qaeda can't run and can't hide - We Will Destroy You. Not quite in line with the anti-war part of the party.
We Democrats fall all across the spectrum from right to left. I know we don't always respect each others' opinions... but this wouldn't be a very "DEMOCRATIC" forum if some voices were silenced because the progressive voices want them to be.
