As long as we are taking back the American flag for all of the people, let's take back the word "freedom" too. Bush uses it all the time. Dems should too. Dems have more right to use it than Bush.
Bush has declared a cold war on the 1st Amendment. He isn't openly trying to overturn it, but he clearly isn't protecting and defending it. Like the Geneva Conventions, the Bush Administration regards the 1st Amendment as something to try to get around.
Bush's secrecy, his flouting of the separation between church and state, his Press Secretary's advice to Americans to "watch what they say" are all examples of Bush's failure to respect and defend the 1st Amendment. That Amendment is arguably America's most vital bulwark of freedom, and Bush treats it like toilet paper. How does Bush dare to say the word "freedom" when he has done more to harm it than any president in my lifetime?
Notice that Bush never specifies what he means by freedom. One might suspect that he means a combination of 2nd Amendment freedoms, business deregulation, and unregulated trade. Certainly Bush never talks about the freedom of religion and the freedom of speech. Ever.
Bush's freedom story is hollow. Kerry has a far better claim to caring about freedom than Bush has.
