Go MacCain!

I never liked McCain much because I thought he didn't have any political cojones but I have to say that I was wrong...

Do you think Rove thought that McCain was going to demand a retraction from the White House for the lies these vets are telling about Kerry's service in that dispicable ad?

The Bush gang look like a bunch schmucks now...

1. These fuckers learned their lesson in Watergate - they aren't "directly"
involved. But it makes them look horrible anyway!

2. Yes, but the White House condemnation will be
"We at the White House deplore < they'll then go through the entire list of charges by SVFT > since we want to have a fair and open debate over the issues."

It's a win win from their standpoint!

4. "Win win"? They're eating crow
and will now have to emphasize Kerry's exemplary record despite themselves.

There's nothing to be won by the GOP from McCain's statement. Especially Arizonans, the most important casualty of this stupidass move by swift boat vets.

McCain's statement or the lying ad?

11. Uh Oh... this is not going to work
Condemnations of the ad just up its profile. The DNC attempting to suppress it by writing stations just makes it hotter. The ad works at the gut level and it is going to hurt, big time.

Best possible thing would be to ignore it after a low key "this is what is wrong with this ad" press release.

BUT...it may already be too late for that.

Its all over the news that McCain has called this ad bullshit and Kerry isn't taking it. It will actually backfire on Bush.

15. you
are being overly pessimistic. The voter you describe is already in the Bush column. The swing voter is a different democraphic. Young single women, and older married women make up the most of this group. Also remember, its not just the south we are after. The upper midwest and southwest have a different demographic than what you are describing.

17. Trailer park Joe Sixpack...
was never going to vote for Kerry anyway, so who gives a shit what they think.

Trailer park Joe Sixpack are not "swing voters".

19. Such a voter would never vote for McCain anyway . . .
so why are you worried about them?

On the other hand, this will not hurt Kerry at all among the people with whom he has a chance. Swing voters who want to vote Republican but feel uneasy about the direction the party's taking are likely taking notice of this smear campaign against Kerry and will be impressed that McCain is stepping in to speak up on his behalf. This could be enough to push them over to Kerry and, even if it isn't, it will certainly nudge them closer to him, making it more likely they'll be pushed over to him by one of the Republican's later and sure-to-come ham-handed strategies.

24. No, it won't cost him the election but
attitudes like yours just might.

Dismissing half the electorate as "rural, redneck, trailer park Joe Sixpack voter...too stupid..." to understand the shining purity of your self righteous, elite views will certainly go a long way toward winning those votes. But hey who needs 'em anyway they're just a bunch of drunks with stupid minds. :eyes:

I think you might be very surprised. The only people this ad appeals to are extremely right wing. It rates right up there with the American Spectator's and Bush* campaign stories about candidates fathering black babies and the like. The right wing eats it up, poor things.

Most educated voters, especially moderates, hate this sort of thing and will not welcome more Regnery publications/conspiracy ads. The right wing will buy the book in bulk, but years from now, it'll be remembered as just another Willie Horton type of politicking.

20. The 2000 SC Republican Primary is NOT the 2004 General Election
What worked against McCain among a handful of Republicans in 2000 will not necessarily work with swing voters in crucial states across the country in 2004. You cannot compare the two.

21. I agree
Everytime the pundits tried to compare this year's election with past presidential elections, they've been proven wrong.

This has been by far one of the most unpredictable election seasons in awhile (at least for me).

22. McCain acts less than completely dickish, so unusual for a repub that
we praise him like he was the second coming. How far have we fallen that there is only one name in the republican party to denounce this disgusting, lying ad?

23. I THINK MCCAIN UNDERSTANDS
revenge and retribution in ways few of us can ever hope to imagine! I am one who thinks he still wants payback for the attack on his family. Therefore, I predict that at some point, late, late in the campaign, he'll either stop hawking for bush or turn on bush in an intense tirade. just a feeling...

25. McCain is a conservative, but a man we can live with
He is still an honest man with integrity and a sense of decency. He showed that today.

We should respect him for what he is, even if we agree with him on very little.

28. Gawd, I love this love-hate thing we have going
on with McCain.

During the Veep-stakes when McCain's name was out there
as a possible second on a unity ticket, I couldn't stand
coming to DU b/c of all the flame wars.

But now it's all lovey-dovey again.
