I am really glad Elizabeth is continuing her tradition of writing entries for the blog like she used to do on the Edwards web site. I always enjoyed reading her personal stories, sort of an inside the campaign view.
Loving Missouri
It seems like I ought to start the way I speak when we are on the road -- HELLO BLOGGERS!
We are just getting up in Kansas City after a really late night crossing Missouri. Was it just yesterday morning that we woke up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri? After a send off rally there -- where Jack tried to take the microphone from John -- we headed to meet up with the Kerrys in St. Louis for a really awesome rally. Congressman Gephardt told me that there were twice as many people at this rally at the beautiful train station than at a similar rally in 1992 -- wow. There is no doubt about what Missouri, the Show Me state, wants -- as one sign said later in the day at Jefferson City -- "Show me a new president.''
Each event was bigger than expected, each crowd waited longer, and it didn't stop all day. And all night. After the whistle stop in Sedalia at 11 PM, we did two more 'slow rolls' through crowds of several hundred people. And the last one was after midnight. John Kerry spoke from the back of the train as the crowds filled the tracks behind us.
I'll tell you one thing -- we understand. We all really do understand how much your hopes are pinned on our getting this right, on our working as hard as we can in these last months, on our touching and reaching and moving as many Americans as we can. And if we hadn't gotten it before, Missouri "showed us" yesterday how much it matters.
The train is incredible. The car we are in -- it was in a previous entry -- is the one Truman rode in 1948, and it is polished hardwoods, with tapestry-like window shades and leather seats. The end car, from which the guys have been speaking, has a little wooden desk -- and it makes you wonder about all that might have happened sitting there. We ate dinner with an actual tablecloth last night -- a real treat for those of us who have eaten out of styrofoam for the last month.
A couple of small things, too, beside that Jack is desperate for someone to hand him a live microphone. Emma Claire was a little down that Vanessa was not with us yesterday, but she and Jack really bonded with Alex -- and it looked like it was reciprocal as they filmed one another with Alex's camera. And in Memphis, two people came up to me who had gone to school at my high school -- which might not sound so strange -- except that my high school had less than 400 students . . . and it was in Japan. I will be looking for ex-military families, especially what we affectionally call 'overseas brats' as we criss-cross the country. Please introduce yourself to me if you get the chance. And, of course, always tell me if you are a blogger.
We are so glad to be on this team, and I look forward in the next months to getting to know y'all better.
