Here is more on the Wendy's fiasco in NY
I read about the right wing slant here at DU. Kerry / Edwards stopped by my hometown on their way back from the DNC. They only stopped once, at Wendy's, but they also ordered about 20 lunches for $200.00 from a local restaurant.
They were targeted as elitist diners, but it just ain't the truth. Funny how Rush & Co. can slant things.

Since this story made it to DU, I thought that I should link y'all to the follow up.

PEACE AND LOW STRESS!

1. Newburgh Yatch Club
Was never elitist. It would probably receive a two star rating. It is actually quite run down and ghetto.

2. I admittedly don't know... but...
anything with Yacht and Club used together is elitist :-)

3. Seems like this kind of allegation
is best left untouched. Always a fine line whether attacking this kind of thing just fans the flames.

8. The Hudson River Yacht Club
is actually located in Brooklyn, east of Kings Plaza just North of the Belt Parkway. It's a nice enough place for my union to use for the monthly meeting of its Brooklyn Bedsole Club, where all us super-rich, tony electicians meet for hor d'ourves and cocktails on a monthly basis.

The ambiance is only enhanced by sixty or seventy construction workers who stop in after work to talk over job issues and politics over pork chops sauteed in onions, with boiled potatoes and green beans. Also vintage Budweiser in bottles.

Sheeesh.

The media SUCKS!

4. I agree, but this place has no ambiance at all
It is middle class. Real middle class. No yachts in sight.
A DU'er had posted some stories (from Rush & Co.) regarding this dual lunch. I just want to point out that Newburgh has a super elitist country club where the Dems could have spent $200.00 on each lunch. Instead they spent less than $10.00 on each lunch, and were labeled elitist.

Worse still, the DU'er that posted the right wing speaking points was shot down as a freeper, when in reality the stories that he posted were all "true" to a degree (Kerry did stop at Wendy's, and DID order lunches from another restaurant), but the real truth is exposed in the link above.

6. Not Always
When I lived in New Jersey, from time to time I'd go to a sleazy bar in Summit called "Floyd's". Since it was on the banks of the Passaic River, the regulars would refer to it as "The Passaic River Yacht Club".

16. Same here with a group of river rats who had "weekend homes"
...old cabooses and trailers...at their "yacht club" on the river.

They had biker barbecues, set out trot lines, had local bands play every weekend, and an all-around good time drunk fest every weekend.

NOTHING at all elitist at this "yacht club." :-)

15. Not so...
Sometimes people named groups "Yacht Club" in jest.

5. Thanks...very interesting
I heard this story about the elitist lunch over and over...on cable and broadcast too.

Kudos to the paper for the story and even Fox...for checking the facts.

Thanks for posting this.

7. Hey, this is a great story!
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 10:36 AM by IndianaGreen
Kansas City Star, under the headline "Save room for scallops": "While Kerry and John Edwards had a photo-op lunch at a Wendy's in Newburgh, N.Y., their real lunches were waiting on their bus, says the New York Post."

Mark Steyn in The Jerusalem Post and The Daily Telegraph of London: "It then emerged that Wendy's had just been an appetizer ... John Edwards is right: There are two Americas – one America where folks eat at Wendy's, and another America where the elite pass an amusing half-hour slumming among the folks at Wendy's and then chow down on the Newburgh Yacht Club's specials of the day."

Hey, this is a great story! We see the same rightwing newspapers that sold us the lies about Saddam and WMDs telling us now that Teresa and Elizabeth are secretly eating scallops, or GAWD forbid, Abalone Ayala! What can one expect from media owned by Hollinger and Murdoch?

10. there is a little link that says nominate
I've never been on the main page! :kick:

Newburgh looks so much like Moore's Flint, MI; our 'yacht club' is so sad!

11. well, i recall Elizabeth Edwards saying in an interview (or was it
during her convention speech) that her and John Edwards' wedding anniversary was going to be on that Friday, the day after the convention and that she and John Edwards would be celebrating their
anniversary, "The way we always do: at Wendy's" -- so, so much for the crap about the candidates throwing their Wendy's food away. Feminazzi Limbaugh wasn't listening.:silly:

12. 20 lunches for 200= 10 dollars each
not much higher than average wendy's dinner.

13. the purpose was to fulfill the tradition of Edwards couple's anniversary
none of them ever tried to act like they always eat at wendy's. they always said they wanted to stop by so edwards and his wife can keep the tradition of going there every year on their anniversary.

14. and there are pics of them eating in Wendy's
They didn't take anything with them or throw anything but wrappers out. I've never listened to Rush, but I hear that he likes to party.
