Kerry on Attack on Embryonic Research Issue (Sunday WP)
Bush Challenged on Science Front

By Ceci Connolly
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, August 8, 2004; Page A01

Seizing an issue with overwhelming bipartisan support, the Kerry campaign is marking the third anniversary of President Bush's decision to limit federal embryonic stem cell research with a series of high-profile events this week that call into question the administration's commitment to science and breakthrough medicine.

Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.), building on a theme he and Ronald Prescott Reagan introduced at the Democratic National Convention, is launching the latest attack Saturday in the weekly Democratic radio address, pledging that when he takes office the Bush restrictions will be lifted and he will "stand up for science."

Monday, daughter Vanessa Kerry, running mate Sen. John Edwards (N.C.), doctors, patients and scientists will hold briefings, rallies and news conferences to highlight an issue on which they say Bush is far from the mainstream.

1. How is highlighting an issue and supporting it an attack?
Why do they provide context for Kerry campaign moves yet not for Bush's?

2. my gut feeling on this..
is that it's one of the few wedge issues that might actually work. Abortion, gay rights.. those are old and everyone has picked their side. They're tired. Stem cells, however.. hehe.. they have potential to swing some voters, I think..
