President Bush's approval ratings on the issues widely perceived as his strengths -- the handling of the fight against terrorism and the war in Iraq -- have sunk to record lows in California, a Field Poll released today shows.
As the president prepares for his 13th visit to California, the polls show just 36 percent of state voters approve of Bush's handling of the Iraq war -- compared with 61 percent who disapprove.

In another key indicator, 56 percent of the California voters surveyed see the country as being seriously on the wrong track -- the highest number in a dozen years, the poll showed. That is a dramatic turnaround from January 2002, when 60 percent of Californians thought the country was headed in the right direction, and just 26 percent thought it was on the wrong track, the poll showed.
And on an issue that has proven pivotal in past presidential elections -- the economy -- Bush wins the approval of only 41 percent of California voters surveyed, while 54 percent disapprove of his work on the economy.
