Ohio voter purge via Hamilton County continues: Ex-felons' voting rights misstated (August 4, 2004, summary of article) Reform advocates fault Hamilton County --Hamilton County elections officials are providing "misleading and erroneous" voting information to ex-felons, a Cincinnati-area prisoner advocacy group said Tuesday. The Prison Reform Advocacy Center found that one in five ex-felons don't realize they can re-register to vote, and some election boards were unaware of the law. "This is absolutely unacceptable that boards of elections that are supposed to know Ohio law ... are giving misleading, inconsistent and flat-out wrong information to ex-offenders," said David Singleton, executive director of the center. Singleton said the Advocacy Center is "particularly disturbed" by what was found in Hamilton County. Ex-felons who try to register to vote by mail in Hamilton County are required to attach a document from the state prison system or adult parole authority proving they are no longer in prison. Singleton said the requirement is unnecessary under Ohio law. http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/08/04/loc_exfelons04.html

CLG Exclusive: Ohio Voter Purge (July 16, 2004) by Steven Monroe "I noticed that one of the most critical counties in President Bush's re-(s)election efforts in Ohio, Hamilton County (Cincinnati), had a dramatic decrease in the voter rolls. It went from over 585,000 in 2000 to 519,048 today." http://www.legitgov.org/essay_monroe_ohio_voter_purge_071904.html

3. The primary problem is not purging felons...
It's purging people who are NOT felons, under the guise of purging felons. For example, lets say there was a former felon named Tyrone Johnson who was born on 12/31/69, and another named Jamal Peterson, who was born on 9/5/79. EVERY Tyrone Johnson in the state was purged, no matter what, and EVERY Jamal Petereson was purged, no matter what. Even if they were 80 years old (obviously not born in 69 or 79) they were still purged. And notice how they only did this to "black" sounding names like "Tyrone" and "Jamal."

Now if Ohio is still violating laws, then this is almost as bad. But at least these people know they're felons (their time in prison would be a good indication of that.) But you had people with no criminal records, some of whom even worked for the state government in Florida, getting purged. That to me is much worse.
