John Edwards backtracked to Lawrence, Kansas, for an unscheduled rally
John Edwards backtracked to Lawrence, Kansas, for an unscheduled rally today, because over 1000 people had stood at the train station in the wee hours Saturday morning to cheer the campaign train as it passed through Lawrence.

Despite heavy rain and a last-minute change of venue (to an indoor site), thousands showed up and stood outside the place where Edwards was speaking. The rain stopped, and Edwards came outside to address the crowd.

Can you even imagine Bush’s campaign being so considerate as to backtrack to hold an unscheduled rally and then go outside to speak to the crowd that couldn’t get in to see him? The rally was a huge success. I couldn’t go (no car to get to the distant site in the rain, and it was a sudden, unscheduled rally, so I couldn’t plan for a ride in advance), but the articles in our local paper show how popular the Kerry/Edwards campaign is.

Use the link to go to the actual article, because it has a great photo of the throngs of enthusiastic voters who showed up to see Edwards.

1. Glad to hear it worked out favourably
I heard about it during the morning news shows this AM and hoped that he'd still get the crowds.

I know if the same thing happened here, I'd make sure to return.

4 years ago, was Joe Leiberman speaking to large enthusiastic crowds in Kansas?

8. Amazing, no?
I had no idea the crowd outside was this huge! I am impressed. Inside they could only hold 750 or so and we were wet, smelly but packed in tight.

but Lawrence is the home of Kansas University, and is pretty liberal, though the state is conservative. Lawrence always goes Dem in the elections.

Also, Kansas has three parties, not two, which is why this Republican state has a Democratic governor (Kathleen Sebelius). The superconservative Republicans have stolen the party from the moderate Republicans, so the moderate Republicans largely voted for Sebelius for governor.

The Republican party is so split in this state that they are essentially two parties, not one, which is why I say ours is a three-party state.

22. Is the split in the repub party a fairly recent development?
That sure sounds like the kind of opening the Kerry team could drive a train through!

4. I'm so glad to hear this!
Thanks for posting. I also heard about this story this morning. I was so mad, though, because Bush has been passing by crowds that wanted to see him too and they didn't report that. They just made it sound like Kerry and Edwards snubbed those people.

6. This action on the part of the Edwards family
and the campaign in general should be shouted from every hilltop (and grassy plains area in Kansas)! This highlights that these people speak the truth, and it is so refreshing and inspiring.

I had gotten to the point where I didn't know what truth was anymore at times, but I am definitely back on track and fired up because of my attendance at a rally and this particular story.

7. It was wonderful!
Everyone was so excited and very impressed that they would do this. We got into the site but stood in the rain for 45 minutes before. Energized is the best way to describe the crowd, deafening was the roar inside and again outside when he went out to speak to them.

10. Glad to see they did this...
Last night on one of the local nooze progs they snidely led with the fact that K/E passed up the waiting crowd. As if to imply that Kerry/Edwards don't care about their supporters. I'm pretty sure it was the local Fox affiliate here in Cleveland. WOIO 19.

inside and outside. Everyone was talking about how classy this move was. It will not be forgotten in Kansas, at least in this part of Kansas.

Edit for stupidity (way too excited!)

16. You Know What's Amazing About This? It's In KANSAS!!!
Edwards did this even though there's hardly a chance for K/E to win Kansas. It speaks to his character. Also, there were 1,000 people in Kansas out early in morning just to see him drive by???? That's incredible!! Somethin's happenin'...

23. MuseRider,
I tried to private email you, but I am not authorized to send a private message because I am new and haven't accumulated enough posts. Do you visit smirkingchimp.com? I can be chimpmailed there, and can, of course, send chimpmails there.

26. I can't.
Whenever I try to send you an email or send a DU private message, I get the notice that I am not allowed to because I have too few posts. (What is the magic number, anyway? Does anyone know?)

If you were to email me, though, then I would have an address I could reply to.
