dumb ass Laura Bush "took a subtle jab" at John Edwards
first the stem cell thing and now this. i dare the idiot to debate ron reagan or the people that edwards defended in his cases.

<As part of a one-day tour of three swing states, First Lady Laura Bush stopped in Langhorne, Bucks County, this morning to address the Pennsylvania Medical Society and accept the group's endorsement of her husband's re-election campaign.

"President Bush stands on the side of doctors and patients," the first lady told the audience of about 250 doctors and medical workers, in a speech that focused on medical liability reform, touched on stem cell research and heart disease, and lauded her husband's work at home and abroad.

Although she avoided direct comment about Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, she took a subtle jab at vice presidential candidate John Edwards, a trial lawyer, when calling for medical liability reform.

"The primary reason rates are skyrocketing is that the American legal system looks more and more like a lottery for lawyers," she said.

1. Hey Laura
Don't most people who play the "lottery" lose?

More and more injured and disabled people are losing in court because of the insurance industry, conservative hacks your husband has appointed.

2. More Likely...
...rates are skyrocketing because of 16-year-old girls who are such bad drivers that they kill their boyfriends.

Right, Pickles????

18. Right!
I don't think she served any jailtime either, did she? While she was able to move on, the family of that young man was probably never the same. She took a life and she can thank a lawyer for keeping her out of jail. Witch. She should just get her anti psychotic meds refilled and shut up. She will never compete with Teresa as far as intelligence and knowledge of world events. And she shouldn't try. She is an authority on nothing!

3. Yeah, like the lawyer who got her off for running over and killing her
boyfriend? Those damn lawyers, they are only bad when they are helping poor people, not rich people. Laura Bush has zero credibility, just like her partner in crime.

so that is ok.

but it's not ok for Edwards taking on the case of a girl who had the insides of her body ripped out because of a defective product and while she is ok now, she still has to deal with it for the rest of her life.

Society want to hear from Laura Bush?

When is the media going to expose the cases John Edwards
"trial lawyered"? If the public knew about them, they would call him a hero.

When are doctors going to wake up to realize that it's not the trial lawyers screwing them - it's the insurance companies.

about her health care. The trial lawyers are really giving the health head CEO's a bad time of it. How are they going to get all their millions if the weasly trial lawyers get some? And then...and then...who is going to donate to the Republican party?

10. Sorry Laura, your hypothesis is not supported by the facts
This from a major study by Americans for Insurance Reform.

<snip>

We obtained data on insurance rate and loss cost movement in every state from 1985 through 1998. We then segregated the states into three categories: states that enacted the fewest number of tort law changes over the period; states that passed a midrange level of tort law limits; and states that enacted the most “tort reform.”

The hypothesis we tested was simple: if tort law limits succeed in reducing insurance costs for consumers of insurance, that should be evident in the trends of insurance costs. As tort law limits get more severe, the trends in rates and underlying loss costs should be less.

We tested this hypothesis for the lines of insurance subject to general tort reform and to product liability and medical malpractice separately, since states often enact separate tort law restrictions to be applied just in those areas.

We found that the trends in rates/loss costs do not support the hypothesis that “tort reform” has succeeded in holding down insurance costs or rates. Despite what “tort reform” proponents promised lawmakers, tort law limits enacted since the liability insurance crisis of the mid-1980s have not lowered insurance rates in the ensuing years. States with little or no tort law restrictions have experienced the same level of insurance rates as those states that enacted severe restrictions on victims’ rights.

16. Laura Bush is not dumb; she knows that frivolous lawsuits aren't a problem
She does know, however, that the goal of big business goal is no lawsuits, period--and that these people are the main financiers of the Republican party.

This goes for the doctors as well, who still, in many cases, refuse to police themselves and weed out the small number among them responsible for the vast majority of malpractice lawsuits. That said, I think we can agree that "frivolous" lawsuits are not a good thing for anyone.

Doctors' liability rates were raised for this reason and because the greedy insurance companies needed to recoup their losses due to the recent stock market bubble bursting.

The GOP is more than disingenuous in their repeated flogging of this basically nonexistent problem.

17. GOP backs "trial Lawyer" Fl.Senate Seat
http://www.sptimes.com/2004/07/07/State/McCollum_brands_Marti.shtml

Republican Senate candidate Bill McCollum on Tuesday quickly labeled rival Mel Martinez "the John Edwards of Florida" for his past work as a trial lawyer.

Martinez spokeswoman Jennifer Coxe called the criticism "hogwash" and an effort to drive a wedge between President Bush and Martinez, his former housing secretary.

And Pot Meet Kettle:

Gov. Jeb Bush called it "incorrect" to liken Martinez to Edwards and said the Republican nominee would not be helped by a primary fight "based on accusations and innuendo."

"Mel Martinez was a successful plaintiff's lawyer, but he's a proven conservative," Bush said. "His views are conservative. He's a Republican. He's in the mainstream of political thought in our state, just as McCollum is."

Yeah, he's been such an overachiever.

He's destroyed the US economy. Brought death and destruction to the ME. The biggest terrorist attack in US happened on his watch. Yep, he's accomplished so much.

25. The primary reason rates are skyrocketing...
is because of incompetent doctors and good doctors refusing to kick these incompetent doctors out of the profession. Did you know that until recently, doctors who lost their license in one state could just move to another and set up shop there? Thankfully they cannot do this anymore, with states sharing their registries, but the medical malpractice problem is overstated. I also believe that a big reason for the rate increases from medical malpractice insurers is the bear market and the said decreases in value that have been a result of this bear market.
