Laura Bush Bashes Kerry Stem Cell Stance
LANGHORNE, Pa. - First lady Laura Bush defended her husband's policy on embryonic stem cell research Monday, calling Democratic rival John Kerry's criticism "ridiculous" and accusing proponents of overstating the potential for medical breakthroughs.

"We don't even know that stem cell research will provide cures for anything — much less that it's very close" to yielding major advances, Bush said.

The first lady weighed in on the highly charged political and scientific issue on the third anniversary of Bush's decision to limit federal funding of embryonic stem cell research to only the 78 stem cell lines in existence Aug. 9, 2001.

So, since we don't know if it will provide cures, then cancel the research? Wha????

5. Laura Bush through the ages.
We didn't know if heavier-than-air flight was possible.

We didn't know what caused infections & disease.

We didn't know if we could escape the earth's gravity.

History is FULL of naysayers like Laura who were all proven wrong.

8. Ignorance is bliss

We don't know if stem cell research is going to provide any
cures - so let's not research it.

We don't know if mankind is creating climate change - so let's
not research it.

We don't know if alternative energy can be competitive to fossil fuels
- so let's not research it.

I guess what we don't know... we don't want to know!

19. That's the logic that will keep Bush in office -
we don't know what kind of president Kerry will be, so I can't vote for him. I know Bush is an idiot and has screwed up the economy, the war on terra, and the environment, but at least I know what I'm getting.

Has anyone else heard this logic coming from the right?

this reminded me of what someone said to me today when they saw my Kerry/Edwards pin. Someone had told them that .."at least we know what we're getting with bush"! I said ..yeah, we know what we would get with bush but you obviously Don't!

What the hell makes her qualified to state "we don't even know that stem cell research will provide cures for anything?"
I don't mind Laura Bush...she seems nice enough but if she's going to step outside what seemed to be her previous role and start shooting off her mouth about things she doesn't know anything about then she deserves to get taken to task for it.

27. ugh
So, where in her little speechlet does the empty-headed tranq addict cite ONE scientist, ONE research group, ONE respected organization to support her 'we just don't know' contention?

Not one - so it's little more than an uninformed opinion. Note the article cites quite a few authorities supporting the opposite view.

This creature should concentrate more time to raising her trollops, and less on subjects she obviously knows nothing about.

34. I've been insulin dependent virtually my entire life, and I
actually KNOW someone who has received stem cells and no longer requires insulin.

No, it doesn't always work, but when you live with a debilitating disease, the knowledge that SOMEONE beat their fate is so worthwhile.

I'm on the list, waiting patiently and hopefully.

Stem cell research is the next great frontier for mankind, and we are so very nearly there.

And Laura? She's full of it.

As JFK said last night, "Don't you deserve a president who actually believes in SCIENCE?!"

We sure as hell do, Senator; we sure as hell do.

35. Pharmaceutical companies have a huge stake in the FAILURE
of stem cell research.

If I had to pay for my own diabetes treatment, it would cost me something like 6,000 dollars a year or MORE (I have state-of-the-art treatment; insulin pump, etc.--which every IDD deserves, IMHO).

Multiply that by all the insulin-dependent diabetics, not to mention the others, and figure out the loss to Pfizer if SCR succeeds (and there are documented cases that it has). An often overlooked part of the "controversy" (why the hell is SCR controversial, anyway?)

Pretty compelling argument for Laura's position, eh?

41. That's exactly why we don't have a cure for AIDS
and many other medical problems. There's more money in selling them drugs!

Kerry hasn't mentioned anything about changing this but has promised to negotiate for lower drug prices and insurance and whatnot.

Some of these corporations are literally killing America.
