I'm sick of how the right-wing in this country has monopolized that term and defined it as something that it isn't. I've spoken to dozens of people over the years who claim to be "pro-life" when it comes to abortion, but they also wholeheartedly support the death penalty and needless wars.
It's time for the Democratic Party to start using that term as it applies to ALL life. If you oppose capital punishment then you're pro-life. If you don't want people to die in needless wars then you're pro-life. You can even be pro-life and support abortion rights. "Pro-choice" doesn't mean "pro-abortion", it means "pro-CHOICE". Support of a woman's right to choose is not the same thing as supporting what she chooses. There is a HUGE distinction there, but a lot of people in this country have no idea of that because we keep letting those on the Right define what we stand for rather than defining OURSELVES.
If you were to stop applying the term "pro-life" to the abortion issue exclusively and apply it to EVERY issue where lives are at stake, then the rightful owner of the term (if a term can be "owned") couldn't be more clear.
EDIT: I meant to post this in the regular GD forum. The mods can move it there if they want. Thanks.
